Who We Are

Since opening in 1998, The Tech Interactive has been an integral part of the San Francisco Bay area and is proud to serve families and young people through hands-on activities, experimental labs, and design challenge experiences.

Here at The Tech our mission is to inspire the innovator in everyone! We are a team of diverse individuals committed to creating learning experiences that empower young folks to innovate with creativity, curiosity, and compassion. We believe that technology is leading and transforming lives all over the world and we want to help develop the next generation of problem-solvers.

If you join our team, we know you will have a fulfilling and rewarding role focused on giving back to our community, especially those that have been historically marginalized and underserved.

Position Overview

The Senior Manager will be primarily responsible for exhibit concept and content development, utilizing methods that ensure the integration of IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility) considerations and visitor voice into the exhibition development process. In addition to conceptualizing, designing, and working collaboratively to implement engaging and inclusive exhibits, this role will involve managerial responsibilities, including overseeing other staff, managing projects, and ensuring the successful execution of exhibits and IDEA initiatives. This position will lead projects that require strong collaborative relationships, both internally and externally, and contribute to realizing a long-term strategic vision of The Tech Interactive through its exhibit experience. This full-time, exempt position reports to the Senior Director of Exhibits R&D.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including members of exhibits, education/learning, design, marketing, development, operations teams, and our broader community to develop cohesive exhibit concepts that align with organizational goals and community needs.
  • Perform background content research, synthesizing into conceptual design and interpretive strategies for exhibits, write content/copy for labels and digital resources, and work collaboratively with the team to execute the vision.
  • Lead the integration of inclusion and accessibility features into exhibit design, exceeding ADA standards, through elements like tactile features, audio descriptions, and multi-sensory experiences.
  • Develop strategies and identify opportunities for improving or expanding on The Tech s IDEA initiatives by collaborating across departments, with the IDEA Committee, and with external advisors and community partners, and staying current on best practices in the field.
  • Manage and mentor exhibits team members focused on content and experience development, exercise collaborative leadership within various project teams, and serve as the team leader for key projects.
  • Provide guidance, support, and professional development opportunities to team members to foster growth and excellence in their work.
  • Champion our diverse community throughout the exhibit development process and by utilizing continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Conduct evidence-gathering (audience research, community listening, co-design, prototyping), analyze/synthesize findings, and lead efforts to ensure exhibits are relevant, engaging, and accessible to our community.
  • As the team leader for a portfolio of key projects, oversee the development from project initiation to completion, including: refining scope, assembling teams, creating work plans, managing budgets, setting milestones, and troubleshooting challenges.
  • Complete additional related tasks or duties as assigned by the supervisor/manager.

Requirements and skills

  • Bachelor s degree required or equivalent years and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of museum exhibits, programs, or other immersive learning experiences, particularly with knowledge and experience applying IDEA practices in these fields.
  • Demonstrated project management experience.
  • Experience with developing and leading collaborative processes with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with research and evaluation methods applicable to learning experience and inclusive design, such as UX research, LX research, conducting literature reviews, focus groups, surveys, observations, and prototype testing.
  • Experience communicating results and findings both verbally and in writing.

Working Conditions and Schedule

  • This is an onsite position with flexibility for working some days at an alternative work location and/or at offsite locations based on community and business needs. Flexibility will vary depending on the needs of the job.
  • Willingness to occasionally work a modified schedule when weekend, evening, or holiday work is needed.

Compensation: $87,000 - 93,000/year, commensurate with experience
