The Business Applications & Platform is one of the most exciting organizations at Microsoft. Business Applications & Platform products represent a new era of business applications that start from data, use AI, are built for collaboration, and democratize solving business problems with low-code/no-code platforms. The team builds the Dynamics 365 suite of business applications and the Power Platform suite of low-code platforms.

This team is responsible for Dataverse core platform which Dynamics 365 suite of application and low code Power Platform is built upon. The Dataverse core platform has the backbone plumbing for storage, middle tier and is the main driver for availability, performance and Gross Margin for the entire suite of Business Applications. The platform is used by many millions of users every day for their day-to-day jobs. Uptime, performance, security and running it in the most cost-effective way is of paramount importance. Platform is also building a scale out solution where the multiple instances of the application can be working together under a single accessible endpoint. Collectively, we are responsible for an incredible portfolio of platform capabilities that help guide businesses along their journey to achieve more.

Our team is seeking a Principal Data Scientist to join our team to deliver on our Dataverse core platform capabilities. You will be responsible for leading an engineering team chartered to design, implement, and deploy platform capabilities that directly contribute to bring revenue through the Business applications in addition to operating the services at unprecedented scale. A big part of your role is ensuring our engineering work is tightly bound to our growth priorities, objectives and our customers succeed with our software and services.

You will partner closely with leaders in product management, design, user research and marketing to deliver innovative and impactful solutions that reach millions of customers worldwide. You will also get an opportunity to collaborate with teams inside Microsoft like SQL, Cosmos DB, Search and all of Business Applications & Platform to help Business applications to grow and innovate.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

o OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.


Additional or Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

o OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

o OR equivalent experience.

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.

Responsibilities

    • Generalizes machine learning (ML) solutions into repeatable frameworks (e.g., modules, packages, general-purpose software) for others to use.
    • Conducts thorough review of data analysis and techniques used to summarize the process review and highlight areas that have been missed or need reexamining.
    • Develops expertise in proper modeling, coding, and/or debugging techniques such as locating, isolating, and resolving errors and/or defects.
    • Partners with teams to identify and explore opportunities for the application of machine learning (ML) and other data-science tools.
    • Identifies opportunities and adds valuable insight by incorporating an understanding of the business, product/service functionality, data sources, methodologies to reframe problems, and the customer perspective.
    • Leverages subject matter expertise to analyze problems and issues facing projects to uncover, manage, and/or mitigate factors that can influence final outcomes across product lines.
    • Utilizes key technologies and tools necessary for data exploration (e.g., structured query language [SQL], Python).
    • Builds data-science business solutions using existing technologies, products, and solutions, as well as established patterns and practices.
