The Position

The Bio Specimen Acquisition and Management function at Roche Diagnostic Solutions is a centralized service function that supports the acquisition, characterization, and management of biological materials, as well as the build of select panels for clinical research and cultivation and characterization of various Microorganisms and Mammalian cell lines.

The Opportunity

As Scientist II you will facilitate the daily operations associated with fulfilling service requests for Culture Collection and panel activities while providing best-in-class simple biological solutions to our customers to drive innovation at Roche Diagnostics. You will receive general direction, but you are planning and driving own work and may act as a project lead. Also, you are:

  • Performing independently assigned project activities. You are responsible for the accuracy, quality, and timeliness of all assigned projects, tasks, and related activities. You summarize experimental results (reports and presentations) and review conclusions with the supervisor/project leader.
  • Using established procedures and scientific knowledge involving manipulating human cell lines, microorganisms, and other biological material. Grow bacterial cultures under sterile conditions to ensure successful transformation and plasmid propagation.
  • Performing standard recombinant DNA techniques including cloning, restriction digestion, ligation, and transformation of bacteria. Analyzing plasmid DNA and RNA transcripts for purity, concentration, and quality.
  • Participating in routine lab maintenance, lab safety, ISO, and QSR implementation.
  • Doing your work according to established internal safety guidelines and procedures, and as specified by appropriate external regulatory agencies (e.g., OSHA).


Who you are

  • You hold a Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology, Cellular Biology, or Microbiology, or related field and 2-4 years of relevant experience. A Master's Degree or 4+ years of experience.is preferred
  • The relevant experience you must bring is with aseptic techniques and bacterial culture or cell culture, manual manipulation of samples (plating, pipetting, labeling, and vialing) on a routine basis, cloning techniques including plasmid design and preparation, restriction enzyme digestion, ligation and bacterial transformation and processing, nucleic acid extractions (DNA/RNA), quantification, amplification and characterization using Qubit, Nanodrop, Gel electrophoresis, PCR machines etc.
  • Must be able to work in a laboratory environment on a daily basis under BSL-2 laboratory conditions. May work a variety of infectious human material (HxV, pathogenic bacteria, or engineered material, etc) and sample types (blood, serum, urine, stool etc).

  • Competent with Microsoft Office and Google applications. Experience with LIMS software, eLN and JMP (Preferred).
  • Flexibility to projects, unique biological material handling requirements, and meeting client/organizational goals and expectations. Client-facing experience is a plus.
  • Understands the importance of biorepository management, as well as the ability to work in a global, matrix environment.


This position will be based on-site in Pleasanton, California. Relocation benefits are not offered .

The expected salary range for this position based in California is 67,000.00 - 124,400.00. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
