Keep Knoxville Beautiful’s (KKB) mission is to inspire and empower Knox County communities to improve their quality of life through beautification and environmental stewardship. KKB is a local 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and an affiliate of Keep Tennessee Beautiful. We are funded through government grants as well as private contributions.

The Keep Knoxville Beautiful (KKB) development director reports to the Executive Director and is the primary fundraising professional for the organization. This position will work directly with the Executive Director to develop a fundraising strategy and is responsible for reaching one or more monetary fundraising goals for the organization. The director should exhibit a passion for the organization and demonstrate strong strategic thinking and communication skills.

This position will start as a full-time, remote position. However, the director must be based near Knox County, TN, and have the ability to regularly meet in person with staff and partners.

Responsibilities

Fundraising Strategy & Execution:

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director, KKB staff, and the Board to develop and implement short- and long-term fundraising priorities that align with KKB’s mission and strategic goals.
  • Lead the design and execution of an annual giving fundraising strategy that engages individual and corporate donors to meet revenue targets.
  • Develop and implement a multi-year capital fundraising strategy to support organizational growth, including special projects and initiatives.
  • Increase private and foundation grant revenue through proactive identification, writing, and submission of grant proposals.

Partnership & Donor Engagement:

  • Actively engage with current and prospective donors, partners, and funders to strengthen and diversify KKB’s funding base.
  • Build new partnerships, focusing on the private and corporate sectors, to support fundraising campaigns, special events, and sponsorship opportunities.
  • Serve as the lead staff for the Partnership Development Committee, driving activities that align with the strategic plan.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Programs to develop a Volunteer Care Plan and create pathways for volunteers to become donors.
  • Develop and implement a Donor Care Plan (DCP) that ensures effective stewardship and long-term engagement with new and existing donors, including individuals, corporations, and foundations.

Special Campaigns & Events:

  • Play a key role in KKB’s 50th anniversary campaign, developing and executing a fundraising strategy to celebrate and support this milestone event.
  • Oversee fundraising and friend-raising events, ensuring each is aligned with organizational goals and maximizes donor engagement and revenue potential.
  • Increase event sponsorship revenue through targeted outreach to potential sponsors and cultivating relationships with existing sponsors.

Budgeting & Reporting:

  • Work closely with the Executive Director and Treasurer to prepare an annual development budget, ensuring alignment with overall organizational financial planning.
  • Establish clear metrics for tracking fundraising progress, and regularly reporting on goals, achievements, and financial health to stakeholders, including the Board and key donors.

Public Awareness & Communication:

  • Assist with initiatives to expand public awareness of KKB’s mission, incorporating KKB’s mission statement into all donor communications.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the organization at public events, donor meetings, and community engagements, effectively communicating KKB’s impact and vision.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Assist with other KKB initiatives as needed, collaborating across departments to further KKB’s mission.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 2-3 years of progressively responsible experience. The ideal candidate should have experience in key areas like annual funds, sponsorships, and special events.
  • Passion for the mission and values of Keep Knoxville Beautiful including litter prevention, waste reduction, and beautification as community improvement mechanisms
  • Experience developing and executing fundraising strategies and donor relations unique to environmental or community-based nonprofits, including individual, corporate, and foundational giving programs
  • Reliable Transportation
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong public speaking ability
  • Strong strategic thinking skills
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for special events

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of progressively responsible experience.
  • A background or experience working with an environmental or community-based nonprofit organization.
  • Proven ability to write winning grant proposals and complete grant reporting
  • CFRE or equivalent
  • Knowledge of evidence-based strategies related to community beautification and behavior change

  • Salary range: $55,000-$70,000

In our 2023-24 fiscal year, we removed 123,205 lbs of litter through 494 cleanups and completed 16 beautification projects. We created 2 murals in Knoxville, and educated over 5,300 people. This was all accomplished with the help of 7,149 volunteers over 18,051 hours. Our volunteer management has added $540,266 worth of value to Knox County, TN.
