Notes To Applicant

The position works exclusively with law students to provide guidance on course selection as it relates to anticipated practice areas of law and opportunities upon graduation; counsels students on managing law school in relation to life demands; assists with professional development; assists with advising students before and during preparation for the bar licensing exam; and oversees many other training and academic support measures offered by the Office of Student Affairs (OSA).

Given the position’s direct interactions with law students, a Juris Doctorate and bar licensure (any state) are required.

The Position’s Primary Responsibilities Are As Follows

  • Maintains a regular schedule of student appointments and advising sessions to advise students on academic policies, course selection, course loads, graduation and other academic endeavors.
  • Develops and presents academic advising workshops and programs as needed.
  • Manages student crises and emergencies, including working closely and collaboratively with faculty, staff, Law Center departments, and University of Houston administrative offices to help students navigate personal matters and implement temporary support measures/accommodations when needed.
  • Collaborates with other Law Center departments in development of programs and advisement for students.
  • Assists the leadership of Academic Affairs and OSA in dealing with students requiring special assistance.
  • Serves as support (and on some occasions leadership) for the many student events hosted by OSA.
  • Works with J.D., and on occasion LL.M., students on academic support and bar passage.

Given that this position is student-facing with a focus on professional and academic development and support, prior experience gained in a law firm, JD preferred position, or other legal position doing any of the following activities will be considered as job-related experience:

  • Training, assisting, advising, supervising and mentoring junior attorneys;
  • Preparing, hosting and/or delivering law student and/or junior attorney trainings and presentations;
  • Conducting outreach to law students and/or junior attorneys;
  • Delivering or assisting with law student and/or junior attorney mentoring, networking and recruiting events;
  • Delivering or assisting with retention of law students and/or junior attorneys;
  • Having passed the bar exam to become a licensed attorney, any advising, counseling or assistant with law students or junior attorneys in their sitting for the bar exam;
  • Advising law students and/or junior attorneys in any capacity;
  • Counseling law students and/or junior attorneys during difficult situations;
  • Counseling and advising nonlawyer clients; and
  • Assisting with onboarding and orientation of new hires.

Qualifications

Bachelors and 5 years experience

Education: Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical or professional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than one professional discipline. Knowledge of the discipline is normally obtained through a formal, directly job-related 4 year degree from a college or university or an equivalent in-depth specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed. Experience: Requires a minimum of five (5) years of directly job-related experience. Certification/Licensing: None.
