Job Summary:

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics (BMG) at Northwestern University is seeking highly motivated individuals with extensive experience in molecular and cellular biology and biochemistry to join our dynamic research team. The appointees will work closely with esteemed faculty members of the BMG department, including Drs. Ali Shilatifard, Shannon Lauberth, Marc Mendillo, Daniel Foltz, Chad Mirkin, and Issam Ben-Sahra to uncover the molecular mechanisms linking epigenetic events to metabolism.

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Research Technologist to join a collaborative team of investigators that are focused on identifying new molecular connections between epigenetic gene regulation and nucleotide metabolism. This role involves working on cutting-edge research projects that are essential for advancing our understanding of these critical biological processes and their implications for diseases such as cancer. In this position, you will collect, analyze and review results. You will also oversee the development and implementation of new protocols and attend and participate in related lab and research related meetings. This role also involves performing literature reviews, co-authoring scientific papers for presentation and publication and coordinating the writing, submission, and administration of grants.

Please note: Ability to work extended hours or on weekends on an occasional basis depending on the project.

Conducts experimental research lab work and/or assists in design of one or more specific phase(s) of entire project(s). May complete mathematical calculations, and/or computer tasks and/or assist in judging validity of data. Follows appropriate protocols, policies, procedures, regulations, Good Clinical and Good Laboratory Practices.

Please note this is a multi-level position that can be hired as either a Research Technologist 2 or Research Technologist 3 based on the minimum qualifications met.

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Conduct experiments to explore the connections between epigenetic gene regulation and metabolic pathways.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret experimental data using various molecular biology techniques.
  • Develop and optimize protocols to improve research outcomes.
  • Using a fully functioning level of skill, completes the following activities

Molecular Biology/Biochemistry:
  • DNA, RNA
  • Protein isolation
  • purification and expression

Immunology:
  • Flow cytometry
  • Cytokine assay
  • Western blotting
  • PCR
  • RT-PCR
  • Plasmid preparation
  • Cloning, mapping and sequencing of DNA
  • Recombinant virus production and purification
  • In vitro binding assays (UV-RIP, EMSAs, etc).
  • DNA and RNA library preparation for NGS data analysis
  • Affinity chromatography

Cellular Biology:
  • Cell culture, cell isolation
  • Functional studies
  • Transfection
  • Stable cell line generation,
  • colony-forming assays, immunofluorescence

Genomics:
  • ChIP-seq
  • RNA-seq
  • Animal Models:
  • Mouse models
  • tumor xenografts
  • genotyping

Administration
  • Maintains detailed records of results which may include collecting, extracting & entering data.
  • Manipulates, interprets &/or presents results.
  • Prepares charts & graphs for presentations & publications.
  • Performs scientific literature searches in support of research.
  • Completes portions of grant applications, manuscripts & publications.


Minimum Qualifications: (Education, experience, and any other certifications or clearances)
  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a scientific major or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.


Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
  • Demonstrated laboratory experience
  • Demonstrated ability to follow detailed instructions as required by research protocols
  • Demonstrated computer skills, including spreadsheets and basic computations
  • Attention to detail and accurate record keeping
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Manual dexterity.


Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)
  • Experience with epigenetics and/or metabolic research.
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics tools and software.
  • Previous experience in grant writing and manuscript preparation


Target hiring range for this position will be between $19.89 to $32.62 per hour. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data .
