Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc (HATCI) is looking for a Vehicle Safety Strategy Manager at our Superior Township, MI facility.

Summary

The Manager for Vehicle Safety Strategy team is responsible for leading a diverse and growing team of engineers responsible for upcoming Hyundai, KIA and Genesis vehicles and technologies related to current and future safety requirements in connection to IIHS, NHTSA, Latin NCAP and CR.

The successful candidate will have a wide breadth of Automotive experience in the area of vehicle safety with the ability to lead the data driven product safety strategy, collaborate with related teams for one voice, execute plans by regular communication with relevant teams with focus on maintaining and achieving industry leadership in Safety. Additionally, proven experience with manpower estimating for short-, mid- and long-term planning, develop yearly business plans plus managing your team's R&D budget.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  • Business management
    • Successfully meet your team's KPI's including Program Timing, Cost & Quality Improvement, Intellectual Property, Budget, Personnel Development, Corporate Culture, etc. Manage workload and projects on a daily basis.
    • Develop goals and objectives for all direct reports. Assign tasks and projects to support the related team's work plan, ensuring all goals are met.
  • Team management
    • Manage and direct safety strategy team engineers in daily activities in support of our three brands: Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis.
    • Ensure deliverables are met for your team's responsible areas.
    • Develop goals and objectives for all direct reports. Assign tasks and projects to support the related team's work plan.
  • Vehicle Development - Safety
    • Project data driven road map of future safety requirements of IIHS, NHTSA, Latin NCAP & CR.
    • Develop product strategy based on future requirement road map.
    • Collaborate with relevant teams for one voice agreement.
    • Develop and update process to match with ever changing safety field.
    • Manage business planning and reporting, including project database.
    • Manage communication between HATCI, affiliates within Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) and/or as a window of communication to outside firms.
    • Host recurring meetings with Marketing & Sales counterparts.
  • Safety Award leadership
    • Timely vehicle nominations to meet internal deadlines.
    • Approval of technical data submissions and maintain high accuracy and quality.
    • Work with team on supporting all official tests at IIHS, NHTSA, Latin NCAP and CR
    • Communicate results and resolve issues timely.
    • Own the process to be industry leaders in safety awards.
    • Work closely with product planning, public relations, and advertising teams to showcase achievements.
    • Improve relationship with all 3rd party safety organizations.
  • Advance research
    • Mentor and train team to conduct advance research on future requirements.
    • Collaborate with related teams (CAE, test, and design) to generate data for technical meetings with IIHS and NHTSA.
    • Propose concept direction and methodologies to develop product based on future requirements.
  • Others
    • Manage bi-weekly teamwork reporting process.
    • Occasional overtime is required dependent on workload and project deadlines.
    • Occasional domestic/overseas travel is possible up to 30% of the time.
    • Communication, Communication, Communication: Interface and co-work with other teams within HATCI and its affiliates
    • Budgeting and Resource Allocation: Support development of Safety Strategy teams R&D budget. Monitor and approve expenses, identify savings opportunities, and make project/strategic investment decisions to support all R&D activities.
    • Other duties as assigned.
  • Managerial responsibilities:
    • Manage, train, evaluate, discipline, and make recommendations for hire, pay changes, promotions, or terminations.
    • Assign or distribute work to direct reports.
    • Instruct and/or train in methods or procedures.
    • Respond to complaints or grievances.

Experience and Skills

  • Strong knowledge in automotive structure, crashworthiness, and occupant safety
  • Strong knowledge of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS), NCAP, and IIHS safety evaluations
  • Expertise in testing, test equipment, and test processes necessary to meet vehicle requirements is added benefit.
  • Expertise in analysis of crash test data. (structural and Occupant)
  • Experience using test data analysis tools is ideal (DIAdem, Hyperworks, Excel etc)
  • Knowledge of simulation (structure and occupant) to provide direction to simulation team.
  • Knowledge of Automotive Industry engineering and manufacturing
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality, demonstrate integrity, and ethical behavior.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering field.
  • 10+ years' experience in automotive industry
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with others.
  • Excellent Communication Skills. (written & oral)
  • Strong Analytical skills.
  • Proficient skills in MS Office - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Proficient time management and organization skills
  • Proficient self-management skills
  • Valid Driver's License & satisfactory driving record
