Description
SAIC provides onsite professional services for the National Oceanographic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) in support of the labs primary mission of Climate Research utilizing advanced High Performance Computing (HPC) Platforms. SAIC, a publicly held company, is headquartered in Reston, VA. Our portfolio of offerings reflects a lifecycle of capabilities that aligns with the critical priorities of the U.S. Government, both domestically and globally. We have offices located in close proximity to our customers throughout the United States

SAIC supports the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) on Princeton University's Forrestal Campus under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for the United States Department of Commerce (DOC). NOAA/GFDL is a large national laboratory with the mission of understanding and predicting changes in the global climate, which it fulfills by building and running comprehensive computer models of the Earth system on the largest computers available (the computational scale is measured in petaflops and petabytes). These models are built by large teams, consisting of process scientists specialized in various subcomponents of the climate system; algorithm developers building representations of these processes using numerical methods such as finite-volume; and computational experts working toward efficient execution of these codes on massively parallel high-performance computing (HPC) architectures. We are seeking dynamic, bright young students to join this team, using cutting-edge information technology in service of the most important problems facing humankind!

This Co-op experience's primary function is to work alongside other Systems/Network Administrators, Architects, and the operations department to support the scientific research conducted on NOAA's remote 120,000+ core Gaea Supercomputer located at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) The Co-op will act as a second tier support to help address ongoing issues and will gain exposure to a wide gamut of IT technology. The co-op will be working with highly technical climate scientists and must have great communication skills to respond to user requests in a user-friendly and professional manner. The co-op will also be expected to troubleshoot computer hardware problems, analyze production job performance problems, and proactively monitor performance of the Laboratories networking environment to identify and coordinate resolution of problems. Specialized projects for individual enrichment will also be encouraged and provided for further enrichment. The co-op is also highly encouraged to get involved any ongoing projects that interest them to help further their development. During these projects the co-op will have the ability to utilize the technology available in our facilities including the Gaea Supercomputer. The ideal co-op will be a customer focused technology generalist seeking exposure in a highly technical environment. The co-op will also be able to support a variety of users from administrators to scientists. Depth of technical knowledge is not necessary, but a passion for information and computer technology is a must. Additionally, the applicant must be a self-starter and be able to work independently with provided projects.
