The YMCA of Greater Houston is currently seeking an experienced Cause-Driven Healthy Living Director to join The Woodlands Y at Shadowbend.

Job Description

The Healthy Living Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Healthy Living Department of The Woodlands Y at Shadowbend including private/semi-private training, group exercise, wellness floor, Smart Start and Community Health. This position will also work with the Member Experience Director in assigned centers to develop strategies to increase member retention and engagement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in health, nutrition, exercise science or related field or equivalent.
  • Two or more years of program management experience, preferably in a YMCA or other not-for-profit agency.
  • Ability to direct programs through supervision of volunteers and staff, development and monitoring of budgets, marketing and public relations, program development and fund-raising.
  • Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborations with community organizations.
  • YMCA Team Leader or Multi-team/Branch Leader certification preferred.
  • Certifications in Group Exercise and/or Personal Training preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications required.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Supervisory Responsibilities

May directly supervise part-time and non-exempt employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; reviewing and approving timesheets; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; monitoring and updating all required staff certifications; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

COMPUTER LITERACY

Skills are essential in all of the Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Access. Ability to use these programs to lighten workload, develop reports and to automate procedures is very necessary. Ability to diagnose basic PC problems and to communicate those problems is very important.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

TRAVEL

Travel is primarily local between assigned centers during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.

HOURS

Flexible with scheduling and available to work operational hours of the YMCA, which may include day, evening, weekends, and/or holidays, based on the center needs.

Essential Functions

  • Leads with inclusion and ensures all members and participants feel welcome and are treated with dignity and respect. Builds a staff and volunteer team that reflects the diversity of the community.
  • Develops, implements, and manages operating plans to promote program and membership growth for the YMCA. Executes strategies to ensure members and/or program participants connect with one another and connect with the YMCA.
  • Direct supervision of all health and wellness programs including group exercise, private/semi-private training, and Community Health.
  • Participates in the planning of the annual budget; manages and implements the approved budget for member engagement and takes appropriate action to correct variances.
  • Hires, trains, and supervises staff including Group Exercise Instructors and Personal Trainers. Develops and retains part time talent and promotes growth within the organization.
  • Provides leadership and facilitates effective and efficient communication with staff on a regular basis.
  • Ensures staff maintain current certifications.
  • Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in healthy living programs. Develops Group Exercise schedules to ensure member needs are met.
  • Works collaboratively with Association Healthy Living Leadership and center leadership to ensure both Association-wide and local community needs are met.
  • Provides leadership and support to the annual fundraising campaign and volunteer committees/boards as assigned. Develops and maintains effective working relationships within the community.
  • Assures compliance with state and local regulations. Ensures program standards are met and safety procedures are followed.
  • Applies industry knowledge to create innovative and strategic solutions to increase member retention and acquisition. Ensures high quality programs are offered.
  • Coordinates special events and activities.
  • Provides data and reports as required for assigned programs.
