AURA has an immediate opening for a Head of Data Science Research and Development position (USA remote).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

As the Head of Data Science Research and Development, you will lead data science, machine learning (ML), and artificial intelligence (AI) R & D activities at AURA.

Your responsibilities will include the following essential duties:

  • Architecting maintainable data science solutions for commercial delivery
  • Leadership of data-science-related R&D as an individual researcher and research supervisor
  • Mentoring data science team members to build sustainable software products in data science, ML, and AI
  • Developing data science process automation, including automated data cleaning, testing / validation, and model deployment
  • Supporting new business development and marketing activities related to data science, ML, and AI services
  • Identifying opportunities for AI/ML product improvement, new features, and future work.
  • Leading proposal writing for governmental funding opportunities

WORK EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION & TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:

To apply for this position, you must:

  • Have demonstrable experience in the development and delivery of external customer-facing AI or machine learning applications or solutions. Data science initiatives for internal corporate or organizational use may be considered based on domain, criticality, and utilization. Preference will be given to candidate experience with solutions in the defense, aerospace, energy, or transportation/infrastructure domains.
  • Must have demonstrable experience in the development and deployment of production data science solutions in the areas of engineering, the physical sciences, or prognostics/diagnostics/condition-based maintenance of physical systems, preferably in aerospace, defense, energy, or transportation/infrastructure domains. Data science experience in banking, finance, insurance, economics, or social sciences will not be considered.
  • Hands-on experience with at least one major category of AI/ML, such as computer vision, time-series analysis, CBM+, prognostics, diagnostics, and predictive maintenance, and non-destructive testing (NDT).
  • Possess the ability to quickly understand and model a novel problem.
  • Possess strong communication and writing skills, including communicating AI/ML algorithms to stakeholders who may not understand data science principles.
  • Fluency in at least one data science programming language (Python, R, Julia, etc.) and expertise with distributed platforms for data science and analytics (Spark, Hadoop, Databricks); fluency in additional programming languages and platforms is a plus.
  • Be comfortable with ambiguity.
  • Be a self-starter who can work effectively without oversight.
  • Have a proactive attitude to address problems before they occur.

Minimum Years of Work Experience:

Minimum of 10 years experience in data science, which may include working as a data analyst, data scientist, data science management, or a related field (a doctorate may be substituted for experience in the case of a qualified candidate)

Minimum of 5 years experience in a leadership position related to data science, which may include working as a lead data scientist, data science architect, technical fellow, data science manager, or similar role.

Minimum Education:

Master s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Statistics, or a related technical degree (Doctorate preferred)

OTHER DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE: (Additional experience or status in one or more of these areas is beneficial but not required for consideration):

  • Prior DoD or military experience
  • Doctorate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Statistics, or a related technical degree
  • Scholarly publications and/or patents relevant to this position

Other Requirements:

  • US citizenship status is required for this position due to AURA s contractual obligations to the US Department of Defense (DoD) requiring all employees working in performance of DoD contracts to be US citizens.
  • Ability to pass a security clearance screening.
