The Associate Director of Digital Media leads the development of compelling, creative storytelling efforts to speak to a variety of audiences and meet strategic objectives. This person sets the strategy for photography and videography that supports the KU brand and guides all such work for KU Marketing. The associate director supervises the digital media team, including photographers, videographers, motion graphics designers, and others, as needed. They work closely with the CMO, directors, and KU Marketing leadership team to ensure that we collectively produce innovative, effective, inclusive, best-in-class work to meet university objectives.

The Associate Director provides the vision for digital media (photo and video) projects and campaigns and oversees the development of a variety of digital media executions: photos and videos for events, social media, and other marketing efforts; stock assets for use across the KU enterprise; portrait studio events; and more. This position leads the digital media team in ideation and brainstorming, the frequent coordination of shoots, training, and other efforts to ensure the team's work remains strategic and creative.

The ideal person for this role enjoys collaboration with professional teammates and is a creative, visionary thinker who is obsessed with photos and videos that tell captivating stories.

This position is mostly in-person at the Lawrence campus with occasional ability to work from home. A portion of time also will be spent on location at the Edwards Campus (Overland Park) and KU Medical Center. Some evening and weekend work hours are required, and there are expectations and opportunities for some travel related to photo and video shoots.

Job Description
30% Management and leadership
Manage the KU Marketing digital media team. Mentor and supervise staff, guide work, and maintain quality and branding standards. Coordinate various visual media, photography, and video projects. Foster collaboration between the digital media team and other Marketing teams. Meet and work collaboratively with the CMO, the directors of KU Marketing, and other team leaders to ensure the timely and efficient delivery of high-quality, high-profile materials. Secure and manage external talent as needed.

30% Media production
Lead the development of compelling, creative storytelling efforts to speak to a variety of audiences and meet strategic objectives. Collaborate across Marketing teams to ensure the highest quality product. Work closely with the Marketing strategy and creative teams to bring strategies to life and ensure that the photo and video plans support KU's strategic initiatives. Define project objectives, guide script development, and lead photography/videography efforts, as needed.

30% Media management
Lead the planning and development for all videos and photos for KU Marketing and its partners (clients). Regularly guide the team as they research shoot opportunities, scout locations, prep equipment for fieldwork, and restore communal equipment. Ensure a robust collection of photography and videography that best represents the entire KU enterprise - 5 campuses, affiliate organizations - and oversee the organization and use of that collection with the digital asset management system and other tools.

10% Other duties
Attend or lead staff and partner meetings. Plan, strategize, trouble-shoot, and seek solutions for a wide range of partners and issues. Work collegially with staff and partners in a team environment. As needed, prepare and present proposals, job-status reports, and other research or project evaluations.

Required Qualifications
  1. A Bachelor's degree in a closely related field, such as film, digital media, photography, journalism, advertising, public relations, communications, marketing, or design from an accredited college, university, or school.
  2. An excellent digital media (photo/video) portfolio showcasing at least six years' experience working in some combination of video editing, video production, photography, or a similar role in an agency setting or an in-house creative unit.


Preferred Qualifications
  1. Prior experience that required a deep understanding of creative storytelling disciplines - particularly photography and videography - and their use in a marketing setting as evidenced by application materials.
  2. Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated experience working with audio/visual production and post-production using current technologies.
  3. Extensive experience conceptualizing, creating, analyzing, and guiding the production of creative, strategic marketing collateral through photography and/or videography. Ideally, previous experience producing such work for institutions of higher education.
  4. At least 1 year experience with Mac OS, Microsoft Office, and Adobe Creative Suite products showcasing proficient to expert level skills as evidenced by application materials.
  5. Experience managing digital asset management systems, asset library curation, and metadata management.
  6. Experience with advanced lighting techniques.
  7. Prior experience that required expertise in the production process for marketing photo and video collateral - the ability to manage the process and guide staff to ensure quality outputs as evidenced by application materials.
  8. Experience in effectually leading or coaching creative digital media teams through a variety of innovative projects and successfully meeting objectives in terms of work quality, productivity, and timeliness.
  9. Part 107 drone license and experience using drone footage in strategic, creative projects.
  10. Experience managing projects and leading teams and working with clients/partners and cross-disciplinary creative teams.
  11. Experience in mentoring and recruiting talent.
  12. Excellent presentation skills and written communications skills as demonstrated by application materials.
