About us
National Grid is hiring an Engineering Manager for our Electric Distribution Control Center in Northborough, MA.
Every day we deliver safe and secure energy to homes, communities, and businesses. We are there when people need us the most. We connect people to the energy they need for the lives they live. The pace of change in society and our industry is accelerating and our expertise and track record puts us in an unparalleled position to shape the sustainable future of our industry.
To be successful we must anticipate the needs of our customers, reducing the cost of energy delivery today and pioneering the flexible energy systems of tomorrow. This requires us to deliver on our promises and always look for new opportunities to grow, both ourselves and our business.
Background
This position is a hybrid role. Our team works from the office minimum two days a week. Compensation is commensurate with relevant experience.
Network Control Engineering is a multi-disciplinary team that resides within our electric control center organization. As a product-development oriented team, engineers focus on integrating scaled automation and new features to distribution system operations. These automation technologies will help National Grid deliver energy more efficiently, restore outages faster and enable more distribution connected energy resources to utilize our network.
The Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) is a software platform that serves as the digital twin to our as-operated electric distribution system. The ADMS integrates the Outage Management System (OMS), Distribution Management System (DMS), and Distribution SCADA to monitor, operate and automate the electric distribution system through real-time, data-driven analysis. As a project team, we continuously build, maintain, and improve the ADMS, adding new functionality and identifying new use cases. These capabilities will future proof our control rooms and coordinate technical, real-time data across many programs, people, and grid modernization platforms. Our objective is to advance to the scaled, centralized grid automation stage in the next two years.
Job Purpose
This Engineering Manager leads a small team of power systems engineering and operations expertise that closely work with the distribution control center. The leader also serves as the visionary for the development of technical features that provide tangible benefits to the control room. Successful product leadership requires successful stakeholder management and maintaining harmony in an ocean of variables.
Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) such as solar, energy storage technologies are rapidly expanding in our service territory. Our engineers perform operational studies where grid edge technologies complicate conventional ways of working. We support the fidelity and centralization of our asset data, network topology, and equipment telemetry; deliver new features; and set standards for future grid automation to integrate and scale grid modernization initiatives including Outage Management functions (OMS), Volt-Var Optimization (VVO), Fault Location Isolation and Service Restoration (FLISR), and Distribution Energy Management Systems (DERMS). The deployment of Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI) and Mobile Workforce Management are also well underway, which will unlock many new digital enhancements for our organization.
Key Accountabilities
Lead an engineering team and the ADMS product development & maintenance for the control center
Develop strategic execution roadmaps for network control modernization
Become the thought leader for digital transformation applications that future proof our grid operations.
