DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The employee engages in a range of entry-level technical tasks across all aspects of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PENNDOT), encompassing design, construction, and maintenance activities. This role involves providing engineering support to various PENNDOT units while cultivating a foundational understanding of departmental policies, procedures, organizational roles, and workflow dynamics.

Training is structured around scheduled rotational assignments within Engineering Districts, allowing employees to become acquainted with district personnel and operational procedures while actively participating in projects that align with the overall training goals. Additionally, employees will attend classroom sessions as determined by the program coordinator, as outlined in the accompanying ET Training Manual.

Work assignments undergo thorough scrutiny before being allocated and are meticulously reviewed for completeness, technical precision, and methodological soundness both during the process and upon completion. Following the successful conclusion of the training program, final job placements will be determined to satisfy the needs of both the employee and the department.

This position entails technical responsibilities related to the creation of diverse roadway, bridge, and structural plans, maps, and similar drawings, adhering to established methods and procedures while applying technical and drafting expertise. Tasks are assigned with general instructions and are supported by professional oversight from more experienced technical staff.

The employee employs Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software to generate detailed technical drawings for roadways, bridges, and structures. This includes drafting and detailing work necessary for the development and finalization of plans based on preliminary sketches, existing highway and bridge plans, as well as field survey data, covering structures such as reinforced concrete box culverts, simple span bridges, metal plate culverts, and bridge rehabilitation projects.

Mathematical skills, including algebra, plane geometry, and trigonometry, are utilized to perform calculations for plan quantities and to execute structural drafting, all under the guidance of professional and technical mentors.
