Position Summary

Peraton is seeking a SME Computer Systems Engineer/Architect to serve as the solution architect to lead the Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (HHS-OIG) journey into AI, specifically in the Azure Cloud environment. The Azure AI Architect will be a leader and consultant in the implementation of AI in the cloud, including design, architecture, implementation, and support in an enterprise-level environment, supporting the Information Technology Service Desk and Engineering Support program for a Contract at U. S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Peraton provides maintenance and operational IT support that includes engineering services for the systems, equipment, hardware, and software. This architect will identify, test, design, architect, deploy AI solutions. The AI solutions will be defined, developed, and tested during the pilot and the planning phases working collaboratively with other divisions or external entities in the HHS-OIG cloud solution including OIG's North Star Cloud Architecture. The position will require thought leadership, hands-on support, and direction of other Engineering staff in the design, evolution, implementation, and support of Artificial Intelligence (AI) integration in the Azure cloud, among other duties.

Responsibilities:

The SME Computer Systems Engineer/Architect is an AI expert who has a deep understanding of architecture and design of the AI solutions in the Azure cloud infrastructure. The SME will operate as a technical expert and consultant to engineering staff and the client, with the ability to oversee and design solutions as well as contribute to hands-on activities including programming and integration of solutions. You will be joining a forward-thinking, innovative team that is responsible for building and overseeing public and private servers and network infrastructure in a way that supports key business objectives.

The SME Computer Systems Engineer/Architect will:

  • Identify and design AI solutions most beneficial to meet HHS-OIG objectives, and develop plans for architecture, testing, and deployment of AI solutions in the Azure cloud environment. The AI solutions will be defined, developed, and tested during the pilot and the AI SME will be a leader in the planning phases, working collaboratively with all stakeholders.
  • Design comprehensive AI solutions that address complex business needs while ensuring scalability, reliability, and security. This involves selecting appropriate Azure AI services and tools, designing data workflows, and integrating AI capabilities into existing business processes.
  • Serve as a consultant to senior management, providing strategic insights on how AI can drive business innovation and competitive advantage.
  • Recommend AI strategies that align with long-term goals.
  • Develop and deploy AI models using Azure Machine Learning and Azure OpenAI Service, including the use of prompt engineering and fine-tuning techniques to customize models according to specific project requirements
  • Recommend and assist in implementing AI governance frameworks to manage data quality, model reliability, and ethical AI use.
  • Proactively identify and address potential risks associated with AI deployment, such as biases in AI models, data privacy issues, and cybersecurity threats.
  • Assist in establishing robust data governance policies to ensure the integrity and security of data used in AI models. This includes setting up procedures for data collection, storage, processing, and sharing.
  • Utilize advanced programming skills in Python, C#, and other relevant languages to build and integrate AI functionalities. Develop REST APIs and SDKs to connect AI solutions with other applications or services.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation related to AI solutions including methods of procedure, SOPs, and technical diagrams.

Required Qualifications:

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • 12 years of experience with a Bachelor's; 8 years of experience with Masters.
  • At least 5 years focused specifically on AI technologies and solutions.
  • Expertise in designing and implementing Azure infrastructure components, including virtual networks, Azure Firewall, DNS, Express Route, storage accounts, virtual machines, and databases.
  • Strong demonstrated experience in the following:
  • Able to understand business requirements and translate them into AI solutions..
  • Design end-to- end AI architectures that deliver scalability, reliability, performance, and security.
  • Hands on experience planning and implementing deployments of infrastructure as code (IaC) in Azure using Terraform; and scripting skills in PowerShell, Python, and Azure command-line interface ( CLI).
  • Experience developing the infrastructure necessary to support AI initiatives, including data storage, processing, model training, and user front end interface.
  • Ability to evaluate and recommend technologies that align with project goals and organizational needs.
  • Providing technical leadership and guidance to cross-functional teams involved in AI projects.
  • Developing and ensuring adherence to AI security, compliance, and governance.
  • Experience operating as the go- to-resource for AI- related inquiries, providing insights, recommendations, and solutioning with knowledge of the latest AI technologies and methodologies. Especially as related to the Azure AI portfolio.
  • Establishment of data governance policies and procedures to ensure the quality, integrity, and privacy of data used in AI models.
  • Identify and mitigate risks associated with AI deployment, such as bias in AI models, data leakage, and cybersecurity threats
  • Experience developing solutions that use languages such as Python and C# and using Representation State Transfer (REST) APIs and SDKs to build secure image processing, video processing, natural language processing, knowledge mining, and generative AI solution on Azure.
  • Knowledge of the diverse set of models with different capabilities and prices points offered in Azure OpenAI Service. Experience in prompt engineering and also customizing a model with "fine-tuning".
  • Excellent problem-solving capabilities and can thrive in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Strong communication skills with the willingness to collaborate with cross-functional departments and teams.
  • Ability to obtain a Public Trust Clearance

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in IT, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding across cloud and infrastructure components to deliver end to end cloud infrastructure, architectures, and designs.
  • Microsoft Azure AI certification.
  • Knowledge of additional cloud technologies such as AWS, Google Cloud Platform, VMware, API Management, and Identity Management

Education/Certification Required:

    • 12+ years' experience in a similar role. Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred.
    • U.S. Citizenship or have been a permanent resident for more than 3 years.
    • Must be able to achieve a Public Trust clearance/position of trust.
