The Department of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Consultant to join their team.
POSITION PURPOSE
The Research Consultant will provide data management and analysis services for several projects focused on improving HIV care services for medically underserved populations in King County. Current projects include data management and reporting for the Max Clinic (a low-barrier clinic for people with HIV), an NIH-funded low-barrier care research project, a mobile outreach team, and a jail transitional care coordination project.
This position is essential in leading the development and implementation of data collection processes for research, continuous quality improvement (QI), and program performance evaluation. The work includes designing and enhancing data collection tools and conducting data analysis and report writing for internal and external partners. This position ensures that the functional, technical, and operational evaluation protocols for data collection and analysis are appropriately identified, implemented, maintained, and enhanced. This position will also be responsible for managing multiple large, complex data sets, developing data summaries and reports, and improving data management practices, processes, and tools.
POSITION COMPLEXITIES
This position requires a high degree of autonomy, personal initiative, discretion, and flexibility to develop new data collection procedures, manage complex datasets, develop reports, and oversee QI procedures. The employee in this position must possess knowledge and understanding of the complexities of assessment, evaluation, and QI processes. Position complexities include utilization of multiple complex data sources and frequent collaboration with data experts in other organizations, particularly the HIV/STI/HCV epidemiology group at Public Health - Seattle & King County, investigators, clinical faculty, and UW Medicine data specialists. The person in this position will create/adapt electronic systems for data capture; manage complex databases; create standing reports for research teams, clinical teams, and community partners; and respond to ad hoc data requests.
This position will report to the PI (Dr. Julie Dombrowski) and will work extensively with other researchers, clinical faculty, and key staff to optimize research and program goals
POSITION DIMENSIONS AND IMPACT TO THE UNIVERSITY
The UW has a long-standing collaboration with Public Health - Seattle & King County (PHSKC) that is a nationally recognized model of excellence in academic-health department collaborations. The UW and PHSKC are committed to supporting the goals of the federal Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative through expansion of low-barrier care as a strategy to increase viral suppression among people with HIV. This position will serve as an integral part of the NIH-funded low-barrier care research project within the UW Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, headed by Anna Wald, MD, MPH, and several Ending the HIV Epidemic projects in King County.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under minimal supervision, responsibilities include:
Data Management (50%)
Manage data reporting for the low-barrier care research project, including development and maintenance of databases to support a prospective observational cohort study.
Manage data for the Max Clinic, mobile outreach team, and jail transitional care coordination project.
Comprehend and interpret complex data files using data field codes and data dictionaries.
Create and maintain detailed, high quality data dictionaries for all data collection instruments.
Manage the overall data quality and data cleaning process for multiple large, complex data sets using custom databases and statistical software to ensure high quality data are ready for subsequent activities, including reporting and analysis.
Track and document recurring issues in data collection or clearing, and provide suggestions to improve these issues.
Provide timely and accurate responses to data queries from the PI, other members of the research team, funders and partner organizations.
Work with collaborators in UW Medicine, Public Health - Seattle & King County, and community-based organizations to share data using appropriate safeguards for data security.
Integrate clinical data from the electronic medical record with data collected during program processes and create related reports.
Adhere to all institutional policies for data security.
Database Development (20%)
Design systems for data collection, typically in REDCap, that are user friendly.
Program standard reports for databases such as REDCap.
Data Analysis and Evaluation (20%)
Work with the PI, the consulting biostatistician and other members of the research team to develop statistical analysis plans and conduct statistical analyses.
Generate data and evaluation summary reports (in both written and Power Point presentation format) for the primary project and related secondary projects.
Create data visualizations.
External Partner Relations (10%)
Communicate regularly with members of the research team at multiple institutions to develop plans, share data, and share analysis results.
Coordinate data transfer and respond to ad hoc requests as needed.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Master's Degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics or a related field. Equivalent experience can substitute for degree requirement. At least one year of experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Database creation and management.
Managing and merging large datasets from multiple sources.
Data system harmonization.
Experience with REDCap, SQL, relational databases.
Experience with Epic or other electronic health records systems.
Experience with data visualization and creation of tables and figures from data sets.
Excellent communication, organization, problem-solving and analytical skills.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Prior research, clinical or other professional experience with HIV/STD.
Prior research, clinical or other professional experience with public health surveillance data or medical records data.
Experience collaborating with and contributing to a research team.
Research specific training in Protection of Human Research Subjects.
Self-starter and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
Experience with writing scientific manuscripts, grant applications, or technical report.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Must be able to communicate study information clearly to clinicians, nursing, support staff and patients.
This position may be stressful at times in that there is pressure to meet deadlines and handle multiple tasks concurrently.
Hybrid position with on-site work in a shared office.
Generally, working hours are Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm.
