Job Description
Senior Construction Estimator
Purpose:
The Senior Construction Estimator typically collaborates with a project team that is part of the owner organization, stakeholders, project management, and A/E to help leaders determine what they need to see a project through to completion. They evaluate relative costs or potential risks and conclude whether they can complete a project within the time frame and budget that the client has or wants to establish. Their job is to perform mathematical calculations and get quotes from vendors to estimate the costs needed for labor and materials.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
Reads and interprets construction documents and specifications developed by Architects and Engineers (A/Es) that are 15% complete or better. From this and project information coordinated by the Chief Estimator and Estimating Manager, he or she develops an organizational scheme using Construction Specification Institutes (CSI) divisional categories and Uniformat systems for early design stage estimates. Quantity takeoff (QTO) measurements of construction scope using scaled units of measure (UOM) that correlate to itemized pricing for labor, material, and construction equipment are organized by CSI. Utilizing construction site field experience, assess means and methods for a typical self-performing contractor to perform the work. The estimator requires proficiency in commercial QTO software such as Construct Connect Takeoff, On-Screen Takeoff, PlanSwift, and Bluebeam. In addition, understand how to utilize data from a Building Information Model (BIM) to support quantification of construction scope.
They may also be responsible for reevaluating project needs throughout the course of the project to adjust to environmental restraints or budget cuts. The Senior Estimator will have the ability to assess productivity factors for special project conditions, estimate general requirements, estimate complex phasing requirements, and non-standard materials, and fixed equipment, and conduct construction market surveys for utilization of market factors into the estimate.
Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:
Provide leadership/supervision to other estimators by planning, assigning, and/or leading the work of others.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The Senior Estimator will work with Schedulers to understand project sequence and durations from which to assess forward escalation. The senior estimator requires advanced proficiency in commercial estimating software such as SuccessEstimator, Sage, CostOS, ICE, and others.
The estimator will have advanced proficiency in the following construction areas: clearing, earthwork, utilities, parking lots, roadways, site lighting. Ideally, the Senior Construction Estimator will also have specialization with Aviation, Transportation, Civic and large infrastructure projects, or capital development programs
Estimators use a variety of technical and soft skills to support the profitable operations or cost confidence and reliability for executives to make well-informed decisions including:
- Proficiency in mathematics, statistics and data analysis
- Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail
- Report writing and strategic planning skills
- Familiarity with analyzing requirement data to develop material and cost estimates for large projects
- Advanced knowledge with analytic tools, such as spreadsheets and database managers
- Excellent written communication and interpersonal skills
- Exceptional time management skills
- Supports with quality assurance and quality control
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture or related field plus six (10) years of related work experience including six (6) years as an Estimator
OR
12 years of work experience in engineering, architecture or related area including ten (10) years as an Estimator.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
None.
