Where you'll work
Most interns are based at our downtown Pittsburgh office (One Smithfield Street), South Side (Wharton Avenue), or North Side (River Avenue), but we also have locations throughout the county.

Internship Eligibility
- Enrolled as a student at a college or university
- Can work at least 20 hours week/semester. (Up to 29 hours/week)
- Able to complete their internship at their designated office (currently, we do not offer hybrid or remote arrangements)

$15/hour
The Office of Analytics, Technology, and Planning (ATP) provides innovative research, evaluation, and planning support to program offices to enhance program implementation and improvement. Within ATP, we have the following opportunities:

Data Science In this role you will improve the quantitative methods used by the Department of Homeland Security. We are seeking candidates with skills in machine learning, econometrics, and engineering (ML Ops or data engineering) who want to apply their expertise.
A data science intern can expect to participate in various modeling efforts at the Department of Homeland Security, train and tune models from scratch, and enhance the organization s infrastructure.
Data Analytics In this role you will focus on conducting research and analysis to inform improvements in the design and delivery of human services.
Areas of focus may include support for individuals with substance use disorders or mental health challenges, strengthening families with young children, child welfare services, services for older adults, and developmental support services.
The intern may also analyze local systems, such as public education, health, or criminal justice, and explore ways to enhance operational analytics within DHS.
Candidates must be proficient in one or more of the following: querying relational databases, data visualization, R or Python, and mapping in ArcGIS or R.
Justice Collaborations In this role you will join the Justice Collaborations team to develop, plan, and implement cross-system projects to improve human services support for individuals in the criminal legal system.
We work to ensure that justice-involved individuals have access to human services while remaining in the community whenever possible. We also aim to reduce racial disparities through our work. We drive this by facilitating our work with an anti-racist framework.
Students in Social Work, Public Health, Public Policy, and other relevant programs are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities may include:
- Researching evidence based and promising practice models to inform the development of new program or process.
- Supporting facilitation of a stakeholder workgroup to assess and/or address a systemic challenge.
- Mapping a system process and identifying potential improvements.
- Coordinating cross-system collaboration for complex cases.
- Collecting and collating grant data for reporting.
- Developing a training for stakeholders.
Product Management In this role you will collaborate closely with experienced product managers and cross-functional teams to drive the development of new or updated products, particularly in case management.
You will gain hands-on experience in conducting user research and creating process and user journey maps. Additionally, you will assist in prioritizing features, writing user stories, and collaborating with design and engineering teams to bring products to life.
Candidates should be pursuing a degree in Product Management, Business, Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or Computer/Information/Data Science. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent communication abilities, and proficiency in data analysis are essential.
Talent Acquisition Operations In this role you will partner with the ATP Talent Acquisition Specialist and human resources to identify and design operational efficiencies across the talent acquisition life cycle for early career talent.
Ideal candidates will have an enthusiasm for people, enjoy crafting outside the box solutions, strong organizational skills, strong project management skills, and thrive both collaboratively and independently. Academic background in human resources or operations may be useful.
Responsibilities may include:
- Developing engaging job postings, social media content, and promotional materials to attract early career candidates.
- Assisting in the planning and implementation of recruitment marketing campaigns to enhance employer brand visibility
- Monitoring and analyzing campaign performance metrics to provide insights for improving future strategies.
- Supporting the organization and promotion of recruitment events, such as job fairs and career workshops.
- Creating reference documents and templates to assist job applicants.
- Collaborating with the talent acquisition team and other departments to ensure consistent messaging across all DHS offices.
Talent Acquisition Program Manager In this role you will collaborate with the ATP Talent Acquisition Specialist to develop frameworks for key initiatives aimed at supporting military veterans and non-traditional college students.
Responsibilities may include:
- Researching best practices for building and managing a transitional training program for veterans.
- Conducting needs assessments with key stakeholders to identify opportunities for candidates at DHS.
- Creating workflows to coordinate programs from the initial candidate contact to their first day at DHS
- Assisting in the recruitment process by creating job descriptions, developing application materials, and conducting initial interviews.
Ideal candidates will have an enthusiasm for people, enjoy crafting outside the box solutions, strong organizational skills, strong project management skills, and thrive both collaboratively and independently. Academic background in human resources or marketing may be useful.
