What You'll Do
The Chief of Staff will carry out the mission of the National Kidney Foundation by maximizing the efficiency and effectiveness of NKF’s Chief Executive Office and Executive Operations. This individual will serve as a project manager, people manager, and strategic advisor to the CEO’s office, allowing that leader and the senior staff to focus on NKF’s highest-level business priorities. This includes supporting the National Board of Directors, management of Senior Staff and CEO initiatives, strategic engagement with the CEO’s other external stakeholders, and key NKF initiatives/programs.
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief of Staff works closely with the Senior Staff to promote interdepartmental partnerships and drive fiscal year planning, quarterly business reviews, target-setting, and continuous improvement.
Must have unimpeachable integrity and trustworthiness while possessing a high degree of tact, discretion, and professionalism. Verbal and written communication skills will be used daily. Maintain effectiveness under pressure. Competency in using a multiple-line telephone, personal computer, fax machine, photocopier, and other standard office equipment. Ability to lift and transport equipment weighing up to 25 lbs. Flexible to work evenings and weekends as needed. Available for overnight business travel. Must have a valid driver's license.

When determining a team member's base salary and/or rate, several factors may be considered as applicable (e.g., location, specialty, service line, years of relevant experience, education, credentials, negotiated contracts, budget and internal equity.

- Execute National Board Meetings, including content development, logistics, and other preparation.
- Responsible for keeping Board and Committee meeting minutes, monitoring and advancing Board initiatives, and ensuring execution of post-meeting action items.
- Support governance initiatives, including affiliate relationship management, bylaw revision, board member recruitment, and standardizing of Board practices, policies, and materials.
- Provide research, document drafting, review, and other support for the CEO and senior staff as needed.
- Work with the CEO to develop and collect content and drive attendance for the Town Hall series and other board engagement initiatives.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO on strategy in one or more areas of the business and develop a strong, independent, data-driven point of view on the work of NKF.
- Assist in the development of long-term goals and objectives.
- Conduct research and analysis to support strategic planning decision-making processes.
- Partner with the Senior Staff to shape meeting agendas, track progress, and drive quarterly business reviews.
- Lead or support cross-functional initiatives that require collaboration between departments.
- Provide support to the CFO for matters involving NKF Affiliates and ensure NKF National resources and services are coordinated and responsive to the Affiliate’s needs.
- Partner with NKF staff to arrange sessions, prepare updates, and partner with appropriate leaders to create resources for Affiliates on requested areas of interest (e.g., planned giving, patient programs)
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- Minimum eight years of related experience in the nonprofit sector (voluntary healthcare experience preferred).
- Experience working with volunteers and the board of directors.
- Experience recruiting corporate sponsors and partners.
- Exceptional project management experience and passion for continuous improvement through systems and processes.
- Demonstrated competence in planning, budgeting, forecasting, and volunteer motivation.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal, organization, and managerial skills.
- Fluent in Word applications.
