Enabling Warfighter Safety

System Safety Engineer:

ECD is expanding our System Safety Engineer (SSE) Team. We are currently looking for engineers with all levels of experience in the field of DoD system safety. SSEs will report to the ECD Director of System Safety Engineering and will work closely with the leadership team to ensure our clients needs are met. If you have experience in DoD platforms, weapons, safety engineering or airworthiness, we are interested in hearing from you!

Responsibilities:

  • Support/lead large, complex safety engineering efforts which contribute to overarching customer systems engineering efforts.
  • Support/lead customer discussions to identify, plan, and document appropriate safety engineering strategies.
  • Support/lead refinement of Concept of Operations, identification of potential safety mishaps and hazards, and identification of safety concepts and goals.
  • Perform detailed functional analysis to identify failure consequences and related design and procedural mitigations.
  • Define system and subsystem safety requirements and procedures.
  • Identify safety tasks needed during requirements, design, implementation, and verification phases of safety critical item development for both hardware and software.
  • Track the status of mishaps, hazards, mitigations/controls, and verification.
  • Participate in/lead working groups and design reviews to help ensure that safety goals and requirements are being effectively addressed.
  • Document and summarize safety engineering status based on event scope, system configuration, and system safety task status.
  • Support/manage tasking and review work produced by supporting team members.

Requirements:

  • Authorization to work in the United States is a precondition of employment. ECD will not consider candidates who require sponsorship for a work-authorized visa.
  • Bachelor s degree in engineering, computer science, or related field.
  • Experience implementing MIL-STD 882E, JSSSEH, ARP-4761/DO-178, AOP 52, or other system safety practices on complex, software-intensive systems.
  • Strong preference for experience in the aviation, missile, or maritime system domains.
  • Experience executing safety analysis techniques such as Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA), System Hazard Analysis (SHA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Subsystem Hazard Analysis (SSHA), and Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA).
  • Experience generating safety documents such as System Safety Program Plans (SSPP) and Safety Assessment Reports (SAR).
  • Experience/expertise with safety architecture at the system level, as well as safety design in hardware and software.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Curious and motivated to learn new technologies.
  • Ability to adapt to different, changing programming languages and technologies.
  • Some travel required.

Additional Experience Requirements:

  • System Safety Engineer: Interest in the field of system safety as it relates to robotics and autonomy.

Nice To Have:

  • Master s degree or higher in Safety Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics or a related field.
  • Experience developing software or control systems for DoD platform or weapon systems.
  • Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering methods.
  • Certified Safety Professional, Certified Functional Safety Expert or Certified Functional Safety Professional certificate.
  • Experience in evaluating and ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Familiarity with Agile planning methods.
