POSITION SUMMARY:
The Backup and Recovery Administrator, under the direction of the Network Manager, is responsible for the design, configuration, monitoring and support of all system and data backup and recovery for all tribal systems across government, gaming & hospitality, health and enterprises. Collaborates and coordinates backup and recovery efforts with the assistance of other IT team members and after-hours IT support. Supports IT data and network resources in server and network design to support efficient backup and recovery.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following):
Backup and Recovery Strategy & Planning:
Develop and implement a comprehensive backup and recovery strategy for a large multi-site tribe with diverse enterprise applications and servers operating 24/7/365.
Collaborate with the managers and organization executives to identify critical data assets and business continuity requirements.
Collaborate with the Data & Applications team and utilize resources to understand and implement data governance compliance requirements
Analyze existing backup infrastructure and recommend improvements to ensure efficient and secure data protection
Work closely with the IT team and IT Security to lead regular backup recovery testing, recovery testing and incident response planning.
Define backup schedules, retention policies, and Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs) for different data sets.
Backup Configuration & Implementation:
Configure and manage backup software and hardware solutions, including disk-based backup, tape backup, and cloud backup options.
Research and recommend changes to backup and recovery solutions and infrastructure for efficiency, cost reduction and security.
Implement backup policies and procedures across all sites ensuring consistent data protection practices.
Automate backup processes for efficiency and minimize manual intervention.
Integrate backup solution with Active Directory for user authentication and authorization control.
Backup Testing & Validation:
Develop and execute a comprehensive backup testing plan to validate the recoverability of backed-up data.
Perform regular test restores of critical systems and applications to ensure data integrity and restore functionality.
Document test results and identify areas for improvement in the backup and recovery plan.
Monitoring & Reporting:
Monitor backup jobs for success or failures, proactively identifying and resolving any issues.
Generate reports on backup performance and capacity utilization, providing insights for future planning.
Track backup storage usage and implement strategies for data archiving and long-term storage.
Collaboration & Communication:
Collaborate with the Network Manager, Network Administrators, AD administrators, and network technicians to ensure seamless integration of backup processes with network infrastructure and user access control.
Provide clear communication on backup schedules, maintenance windows, and restore procedures to relevant stakeholders.
Participate in testing and incident response activities and assist with data recovery efforts in case of system outages or disasters
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)
Stay updated on emerging backup technologies, best practices, and security threats to data integrity.
Document backup procedures and configurations for future reference and knowledge transfer.
Contribute to the development and implementation of disaster recovery plans for critical systems.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Position heavy with lifting of 100 pounds maximum and frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds. Physical factors include constant use of color vision, typing; frequent standing, walking, sitting, reaching, use of hearing, driving, bending; occasional pushing/pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, manual handling, use of smell, near/midrange/far vision and field of vision. Working conditions include occasional exposure to weather, wet/humidity, noise and air quality. Potential hazards include constant computer use and occasional exposure to electric shock, high exposed places, chemicals and equipment.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Bachelor s degree in computer information systems management, Computer Science or similar degree required or five years of experience in computer networking may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Experience: No additional experience required.
Certification/License: Must have a valid driver s license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver s license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must undergo a Criminal background investigation done under the rules of the National Indian Gaming Commission. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge:
Backup and Recovery Principles: Deep understanding of backup methodologies (full, incremental, differential), data protection strategies (disk-to-disk, tape, cloud), Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs).
Enterprise Backup Solutions: Expertise in configuring and managing leading backup software and hardware products (e.g., Veeam, Commvault, Net Vault, disk-based backup appliances, tape libraries).
Disaster Recovery (DR): Familiarity with DR planning principles, data archiving and long-term storage strategies.
Network Infrastructure: Working knowledge of network protocols (TCP/IP), storage technologies (SAN, NAS), and Active Directory for user authentication and authorization control.
Security: Awareness of data security threats and best practices for securing backup data.
Skills:
Technical Skills: Proficiency in configuring, managing, and troubleshooting backup software and hardware.
Scripting: Ability to automate backup processes using scripting languages (e.g., PowerShell).
Data Analysis: Skills to analyze backup performance metrics, identify trends, and generate reports.
Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication to collaborate with IT teams and stakeholders.
Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and resolve backup issues.
Documentation: Ability to document backup procedures, configurations, and testing results for future reference.
Abilities:
Time Management: Ability to prioritize tasks effectively and manage multiple responsibilities in a 24/7/365 environment.
Attention to Detail: Strong focus on accuracy and adherence to procedures to ensure data integrity and successful backups.
