The Shivanand R Patil Cytogenetics and Molecular lab, within the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, is seeking a cytogenetic lab specialist I. The lab utilizes molecular and cytogenetic techniques, including chromosome analysis, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) chromosomal microarray (CMA), and genome sequencing for diagnosis or treatment in cancer and constitutional genetic disorders. In this role, the laboratory technician will perform components of cytogenetic and molecular studies according to established laboratory protocols and work to maintain and improve the clinical testing environment, capabilities and quality of data in the laboratory. This position will perform cytogenetic and/or molecular studies from biological specimens for the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of certain disorders under supervision.

We intend to hire for one position at either the Cytogenetic Lab Specialist I, requisition #24005255 , or Cytogenetic Lab Specialist II, requisition #24005256 , or Medical Lab Tech, requisition #24005276 based on the qualifications of the successful candidate.

Position Responsibilities

  • Performs cell culture on varieties of tissues received for chromosome analysis according to established protocols.
  • Processes cultured cells and prepares slides according to laboratory protocol of chromosome spreads.
  • Stains slides utilizing a variety of techniques including G-banding and fluorescent in-situ hybridization for chromosome identification.
  • Prepares microscope analysis of metaphases and prometaphase chromosomes for diagnostic purposes.
  • Prepares digitized karyotypes using correct International System for Human Cytogenetic Nomenclature (ISCN).
  • Performs analysis of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) studies for clinical diagnostic and prognostic purposes
  • Performs chromosomal microarray (CMA) or NGS bench work (wet lab) and initial data analysis.
  • Maintains accurate and legible records of all lab results and procedures, and accurately interprets and records test results.
  • Participates in lab section meetings with others to discuss quality testing, workflow, efficiency strategies, problematic areas, and laboratory improvement.
  • Performs additional tasks as may be assigned by section coordinator or laboratory supervisor such as maintaining records of inventory and ensuring timely ordering of reagents.
  • Communicates any problems with equipment to the laboratory supervisor.
  • Complies with the appropriate health and safety regulations and work rules.
  • Attends and participates in laboratory staff meetings and continuing education programs.

The Division's multidisciplinary team is comprised of board certified medical geneticists, a molecular genetic pathologist, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, genetic counselors, nurses, and dietitians. Education Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, a related scientific discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • ASCP certification in Cytogenetics or Molecular Biology.


Experience Requirements

  • Must have the visual acuity and analytical skills to distinguish fine detail.
  • Must be able to function at the required capacity to meet caseload and turnaround times, including the ability to set priorities and to optimize the best use of time.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills.


Highly Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in tissue culture techniques for human and other mammalian cells.
  • Demonstrated technical skills in cytogenetic molecular biology as well as preparing slides from tissue for examination.
  • Familiarity with handling and operating digital imaging systems with various software and programs.
  • Familiarity with techniques in FISH and CMA
  • Familiarity with high throughput DNA sequencing (also called next generation sequencing)


Desired Qualifications

  • Participation in scholarly activities.
