The Glenn Korff School of Music ( music.unl.edu ) in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is seeking applications for the position of Assistant Professor, with a specialty in musicology or ethnomusicology, beginning Fall 2025.

The Glenn Korff School of Music ( GKSOM ) is a professional, comprehensive arts institution devoted to the advancement of music and dance, the preparation of the next generation of arts professionals, and service to the arts professions/institutions in the region, state, nation, and world. The Music/Dance Faculty consists of an outstanding array of internationally acclaimed artists and scholars who care deeply about their students, serving a population of over 400 majors; and who work in close collaboration to serve the mission of the School, College, and University. Celebrating the opening in 2025 of a renovated recital hall and a new state-of-the-art music building, the Glenn Korff School of Music aims to serve as a model for post-secondary music education at the regional, national, and international levels.

The successful candidate will be a driven scholar and educator who can contribute innovative ideas in pedagogy, curricular development, and interdisciplinary education for music majors across degree levels, as well as undergraduate non-music majors. In addition to excellence in teaching, applicants must have strategies for and a commitment to peer-reviewed research and publications. Service to the profession and the discipline is also required. Applicants must also be conversant with emerging musicological research and teaching methods, effectively use current pedagogical technologies, and have experience in the mentoring and advising of a diverse student body that includes independent and at-promise students. Ideal candidates will display proficiency with a broad, diverse spectrum of musical traditions. A creative problem solver, the candidate will proactively address challenges and contribute to a positive, productive work environment.

Degree programs offered at GKSOM include the BA, BM, BME , MM, and DMA (with emphases in performance, composition, conducting, or jazz studies), along with the Ph.D. in Music Education, Piano Pedagogy, or Vocal Pedagogy. The endowments of GKSOM and the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts offer faculty and students robust financial support for travel, research, and professional development.

Additional arts offerings include Jazz in June, the Lincoln Calling music festival, and year-round international and touring performances at the award-winning Lied Center for Performing Arts.

Duties And Responsibilities

TEACHING :

  • Teach undergraduate survey courses, graduate seminars and topical surveys, general education music classes, and other curricular offerings according to the candidate’s expertise and the needs of the School.
  • The candidate will also play an important role in re-envisioning the musicology curriculum at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Additionally, the candidate will serve on graduate supervisory committees and advise graduate theses in musicology or ethnomusicology.


RESEARCH / CREATIVE SCHOLARSHIP :

  • Contribute regularly to the national and international conversations in ethnomusicology and/or musicology.
  • Foster and maintain an active research agenda through peer-reviewed presentations and publications.


SERVICE :

  • Serve on faculty committees for the department, college, and university; provide service/leadership in appropriate professional organizations in musicology and/or ethnomusicology.


OTHER :

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of the Glenn Korff School of Music.
  • Conduct all duties in a collegial, ethical, and supportive fashion.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Musicology, Ethnomusicology, or a related field by the first day of employment, i.e., Monday, August 18, 2025.
  • An established and active research agenda.
  • Collegiate teaching experience.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Collegiate teaching experience as instructor of record.
  • Teaching and research expertise in global music, especially African diasporic music, music of Asian cultures, Latinx music, music of Indigenous peoples, transnationalism, and/or the Western canon.
  • Experience and/or enthusiasm for interdisciplinary pedagogy/research in fields such as Anthropology, Ecomusicology, Performance Studies, Disability Studies, Media Studies, Music Technology, or Gender Studies.
  • Experience in student mentoring and advising, especially of at-promise students, independent students, and students from underrepresented backgrounds.
