Position Summary:
The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for defining tests, process and designing test hardware for early-stage prototypes in order to de-risk future products, inform engineering designs, and evaluate new technologies.
This is not your standard mechanical test engineer role, in that there will seldom be a test standard to follow; rather you will need to be creative and define the tests and hardware needed to identify problems and de-risk the product. This role requires a mix of hands-on skills, test creation, mechanical design, and reporting/data analysis. The ability to come up with creative solutions using parts that are immediately available, or fabricated in house will be key to success in this role. You will get the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of marine battery systems as well as develop your skills with CNC machines, Various DAQ/Instrumentation systems, and various manufacturing methods. Additionally, you will be required to work with other teams and engineers in the design, test, manufacturing and systems teams.
Our team philosophy is based on fast-failure learnings using prototype hardware. This role calls for fast-paced, out-of-the-box solutions and a maximum observational approach to testing. Note that these are early-stage tests in order to tease out technical risk and increase Technology Readiness Level ( TRL ) of the products.
Reporting to: Advanced Prototyping Lead
Salary Range: $73,000 to $87,000 CDN per annum.
Main Tasks and Responsibilities
- Assist in developing processes for manufacturing and design-for-manufacturing
- Develop test plans and test reports (note that these tests are often fuzzy and observational in nature). Areas of focus include equipment manufacturability, electrical performance, battery charge/discharge performance, heat rejection, thermal management, plumbing systems, vibration and destructive testing.
- Build prototype battery modules, either with in-house or supplier parts.
- Design test jigs, test hardware and prototype test equipment (some of which will be manufactured in-house.)
- Analyze test data/results and iterate on test plans as needed in order to identify and reduce risk.
- Assist with conducting tests if needed.
- Perform technical analysis of product performance, configuration, applications, and related topics.
- Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the system and sub-system requirements.
- Report findings to Design Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers, and project team.
Education & Work Experience
- BASc/BEng in relevant engineering discipline or equivalent
- 2+ years experience designing, developing, manufacturing and/or testing products
- Engineering Technologists with extensive experience also encouraged to apply.
Functional Skills
- Proven hands-on skills and mechanical assembly/troubleshooting experience.
- Broad understanding of engineering fundamentals across multiple disciplines, and proven experience of applying this knowledge to real-world industrial products.
- Experience with energy storage or power electronics an asset
- Experience with Li-ion batteries and chemistry is an asset
- Experience in the marine industry or marine product development is an asset
- Experience working in a multi-disciplinary engineering team
- Experience managing technical specifications, documentation, and requirements
Behavioral Skills
- Strong decision making, critical thinking, and analysis skills
- Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills
- Enjoys a fast-paced and dynamic work environment
- Loves building as much as planning and designing
- Confidence to operate outside of their technical comfort zone
