Job Description
Position Overview:
The Additive Manufacturing Technician is a hands-on, active role within our advanced Research and Development Engineering environment, supporting the day-to-day production of prototypes and 3D-printed parts. The technician is responsible for machine setup, operational efficiency, material inventory control, and post-processing. Working closely with engineers, this role plays a key part in ensuring business and customer demands are met. The ideal candidate has experience in 3D printing, strong problem-solving abilities, and can thrive in a fast-paced, high-tech setting.
Key Responsibilities:
Equipment Operation & Maintenance:
- Operate and maintain a range of 3D printers (e.g., Markforged, Bamboo, Enders, Stratasys, and metal printers).
- Conduct machine setup and calibration, as well as routine maintenance, including heat treatment furnaces.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and operational issues to ensure optimal running efficiencies.
Production and Process Management:
- Perform day-to-day operations to meet production schedules, including setup, alignment, slicing, and quality checks.
- Manage and maintain material inventory for various filaments, resins, and metals, and coordinate with Environmental Health & Safety for safe material handling and disposal.
- Execute post-processing functions such as powder and support removal,and conduct visual and tolerance inspections on completed parts.
Quality Control & Reporting:
- Inspect, measure, and record data on 3D-printed parts to ensure adherence to project specifications.
- Prepare written reports and presentations detailing production results, data analysis, and process improvements.
- Adhere to ISO9001 quality standards and follow strict documentation practices to maintain data accuracy and traceability.
Process Improvement & Collaboration:
- Collaborate with engineers and technicians to develop, test, and refine processes and tools for optimized manufacturing.
- Assist in implementing equipment, software updates, and process changes to better meet production demands.
- Provide input for process improvements and support the development of training materials to enhance operational efficiency.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
- Education: Associate s degree in engineering or relevant discipline, or equivalent experience.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency with 3D printing technologies, specifically stereolithography (SLA), Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), and Selective Laser Sintering (SLS).
- Ability to read engineering drawings and apply knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Skilled in CAD, CAM, and ERP software for following production processes.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office and strong record-keeping and data collection abilities.
- Experience:
- 1-3 years in a manufacturing operations environment, with hands-on experience in a cleanroom or 3D printing lab setting.
- Competence in using basic shop tools and hand tools.
- Experience in customer service or client-facing interactions.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Educational Background: Bachelor s degree in engineering, science, or technology is preferred.
- Technical Knowledge:
- Familiarity with machine tools (e.g., milling, lathes, CNC), heat treating, and rapid prototyping.
- Knowledge of raw materials and production processes for additive parts manufacturing.
- Understanding of ISO 9001 and 17025 documentation requirements.
- Experience with quality assurance, metrology, and part inspection.
