Duties:
The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Emergency Department (ED) is integral frontline staff performing initial patient triage and ongoing assessment and treatment of acute/urgent presenting symptoms in collaboration with the provider. The RN uses critical thinking and excellent communication skills to care for patients. He/she is knowledgeable of an array of presenting symptoms to quickly triage with appropriate use of nursing protocols in providing evidence-based care.
He/she takes vital signs, collects specimens for lab testing, administers medications, administers blood products by IV transfusion, performs 12-lead EKG as needed, and performs point-of-care COVID-19 testing. The RN documents care given in the correct note template and VHA's clinical reminders. The ED nurse rotates with other RNs to respond to Rapid Response calls at Baltimore Medical Center. The ED RN strictly follows all infection control guidelines to provide safe patient care.
