The nurses in the SICU are responsible for the twenty-four care of patient admitted in the unit. All Registered nursing staff are certified in BLS and ACLS. The nurses manage and are responsible for monitoring hemodynamics, interpreting and treatment of dysrhythmias using ACLS practice guidelines,
manage medical emergencies, administering complex medication such as titrating vasopressors, management of central lines to include: Triple lumen catheters, Quinton catheter, PICC lines, porta Cath, Hickman catheters and peritoneal dialysis catheter. Nurses oversee the daily care of patient with duties
as follows: Administering blood products, providing complex wound care, assistance with insertion of chest tubes and care of drainage system, assistance of insertion of IVC (intraventricular catheter) and care of CSF drainage system. Care of tracheostomy and patients with laryngectomy, and activities of daily
living. The SICU staff are currently proning patients which are respiratory compromised and in ARDS, SICU nurses also provide care for patients receiving CRRT therapy.
The SICU nurses demonstrates leadership in developing evidence based projects to drive improvement in practice, improving patient centered care, and delivering customer focus care through a collaborative stratagem with multiple disciplines health care teams to formulate plan of care for patient. The medication administered include IV antibiotics, IV push, IV medication which need to be titrated, PCA administration, Epidural management, oral, sublingual, topical, transdermal, epidural, nutrition given through NGT and G-Tubes, and rectal. The nurse oversees the care provided by nursing assistance, health technicians, and student nurses.
