VA Careers - Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist:
The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT), Computed Tomography Technologist performs computerized tomography of the head, neck, spine, chest, and body. These exams are performed with and without the use of contrast materials. The purpose of these exams is to achieve diagnostic studies to bring about proper diagnosis and treatment. The employee at this level is fully functional as a DRT in CT and is able to carry out the assigned tasks independently. The technologist will spend time performing CT examinations. Duties include but not limited to:
- Accurately operates a wide variety of imaging equipment to obtain examinations of acceptable quality, utilizing the least amount of radiation to obtain quality imaging for diagnosis and localization purposes.
- Knowledge of cross sectional anatomy and physiology including location, appearance, and functioning of the major and minor systems susceptible to radiographic illumination, and knowledge of changes to systems and organs caused by common medical and surgical diseases.
- Performs all aspects of CT imaging to include but not limited to: Head, Neck, Chest, Abdomen, Pelvis Extremities, 3D Reconstructions of CT, Multi-Planar Reformats CT and Angiographic studies when requested and/or when part of a standard procedure.
- Maintain competence in venipuncture and refer to the Radiology Service procedure manual for guidelines on administration of contrast media.
- Prepares contrast materials under the direction of the radiologist that are used in CT, to include CT Angiography and other exams.
- Familiar with policies and procedures for practicing radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to patients, staff and self.
- Acquires and maintains knowledge in CT dose optimization and the factors that directly affect radiation dose from the CT scanner to the patient.
- Follows Radiation Safety guidelines, properly determines applying technical factors to ensure ALARA dose optimization, positioning, required views, etc. to produce and satisfy requirements for diagnostic imaging and CT exams.
- Maintains knowledge of all department and CT section policies, acknowledging the receipt and understanding of these policies by signing the supervisory copy of the policy.
- Performs and completes imaging studies within the established guidelines for stat, urgent, and routine exams.
- Apply Infection Control practices and procedures for patients and staff, as mandated by the Medical Center and Radiology Service Infection Control policies. Applies safety procedures for self, patients and others as mandated by Radiology Service Safety policies for all imaging modalities.
- Assists in other areas of the department as needed for patient transfers, IV starts procedures as needed.
- Maintains electronic records and files of exams performed on patients.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of existing pay, higher or unique qualifications, or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.
