The Design Director is responsible for leading the design team in creating innovative and strategic design solutions that align with the company’s goals and brand identity. This role involves overseeing the design process, managing a team of designers, and collaborating with other internal departments to ensure the successful execution of design projects. Responsibilities Set and maintain high design standards, ensuring that all design work is consistent with the Essence Ventures identity and messaging. Drive creative design innovation and experimentation, encouraging the team to explore new design trends and techniques. Review and approve design concepts, layouts, and final deliverables, providing constructive feedback and direction. Oversee the design process from concept to completion, ensuring high-quality outputs that meet client and stakeholder expectations. Manage and contribute to various projects across the editorial department, including digital, video, social, print magazine. Begin execution of design direction as lead on all creative projects for Essence Ventures. Assist with managing budgets, create project timelines, and department processes. Initiate creative thought leadership in the creation of high-quality print and digital design. Develop and create brand style guides and launch brand special projects. Work with managers to ensure each project, in accordance with briefing, are clearly outlined and estimated. Review all art creation; suggest the best practice to be adopted and adhere to internal processes, budgets, and timelines for each project in collaboration with the Creative Lead. Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and competitive landscape to inform design strategies and approaches. Advocate for design thinking and user-centered design principles throughout the organization. Come up with and present creative thoughts during brainstorming sessions and project kick-off meetings. Assist in the supervision of the creative department to promote an inspiring atmosphere and desirable workflow to achieve the best work. Act as the primary point of contact for all design-related matters with clients and stakeholders, managing expectations and ensuring satisfaction and alignment. Present design concepts and strategies to clients, stakeholders, and executive teams, clearly articulating the rationale behind design decisions in alignment with the Creative Lead. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Design, Graphic Design, Fine Arts, or a related field. Master’s degree or equivalent experience preferred. At least 7 years of experience in a senior design role, with a proven track record of leading design teams and managing complex projects. Exceptional design skills with proficiency in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, Figma, or equivalent. Strong understanding of design principles, typography, color theory, and visual aesthetics. Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to think strategically and creatively, balancing innovation with practical considerations. Experience with project management tools. Strong problem-solving skills with a keen eye for detail. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Collaborative and proactive approach to working with cross-functional teams.
