General Description

The Lab Manager is responsible for managing the daily laboratory activities at all clinic locations and directly manages the Molecular Laboratory Technicians, Histology Technicians and Laboratory Assistants. This position is responsible for performing general laboratory duties. In addition, the Lab Manager must be able to provide efficient and proficient services to our physicians as well as provide quality, courteous and compassionate services to our patients in adherence to the guidelines, policies and procedures set forth by The Conrad Pearson Clinic.

Essential Job Functions

  • Direct, manage and supervise the daily operations of the laboratory department, ensure an efficient and run the department smoothly
  • Plan, organize, implement and control all laboratory activities to meet department and Clinic goals and objectives
  • Directly supervise all laboratory staff to include hire, train, evaluate, motivate, counsel, discipline and discharge in a fair and non-discriminatory manner; and maintain and develop competent, productive and quality-conscious employees
  • Maintain and perform all necessary quality control procedures; documenting appropriately; ensure regulatory inspections are conducted and certifications are filed; accreditations are acquired; and ensure licensure is current
  • Perform general laboratory duties that include spin and read urines, document results of urine test in the electronic medical record. Spin and process specimens ensuring they are properly directed to the appropriate outside laboratory.
  • Order and maintain adequate laboratory supplies
  • Perform route clinical laboratory tests for hematology, chemistry and endocrinology.
  • Perform daily instrument maintenance and quality control; maintain quality results by performing standards and controls; verify equipment function through routing equipment maintenance and advanced trouble shooting; calibrate equipment utilizing testing procedures; and monitor quality control measures and protocols
  • Organize work by matching computer orders with specimen labeling, sort specimens, check labels, log specimens and maintain accurate records and reporting of data
  • Ensure work surfaces are clean and orderly
  • Maintain physician/patient relationship through diplomatic and tactful management of patients; and communicate appropriate information to patient as directed by physician
  • Familiar with the practices and job duties at the Wolf River Clinic and all outlying clinics and is able and willing to work at these locations as needed
  • Communicate regularly with supervisor, keeping him/her apprised of all pertinent information and providing feedback
  • Ensure compliance for all regulatory requirements including OSHA, CLIA and HIPAA; immediately and accurately document and report occurrences to supervisor; and ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements as outlined in the corporate compliance plan

Position Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist program approved by the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
  • Licensed to practice as a Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist under the State of Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners Division of Health-Related boards
  • Three years of Medical Laboratory Technician experience, preferably in a urology practice
  • Three years of management experience in a physician office setting
  • Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, problem-solving and organizational skills are required

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Requires prolonged sitting and standing, some bending, stooping and stretching, or performing other work requiring moderate physical exertion
  • Capacity to maintain physical activity over prolonged periods of time (stamina)
  • Able to see for the purpose of reading information received in different formats including but not limited to paper, computer, reports, bulletins and manuals
  • Able to hear for work-related purposes
  • Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator and other office equipment
  • Able to lift up to a minimum of 25 pounds
