JOB DESCRIPTION:
The job of the z/OS system Programmer is very complex and requires skills in many aspects of the system. The role of the z/OS system Programmer can vary from one installation to another, but usually includes installing, customizing, and maintaining the operating system. In most large z/OS installations, system programmers become specialists for only specific tasks.

Generally speaking, the system programmer is responsible for managing the mainframe hardware configuration and installing customizing and maintaining the mainframe operating system. System programmers ensure that their installation s system and its services are available and operating to meet service level agreements. Installations with 24-hour, 7-day operations need to plan for minimal disruption of their operation activities.
Qualifications:
At least 10 years of experience as a zOS Systems Programmer leading projects and making critical and complex decisions.
Experience with z/OS Parallel Sysplex and Coupling Facility environments.
TSO/ISPF/SDSF/JCL
Disaster Recovery
General knowledge and understanding the mainframe hardware, software, processors, etc.
HMC skills.
SMP/E
Storage (DASD and virtual tape systems)
Responsibilities:
System Design and Optimization:
Collaborate with architects and other teams to design, implement, and optimize z/OS system components.
Evaluate system performance, identify bottlenecks, and recommend improvements.
Database Management:
Manage databases on z/OS, including backup and recovery procedures.
Ensure data integrity, availability, and performance.
Automation:
Develop and maintain automation scripts to streamline repetitive tasks.
Monitor system metrics and automate routine functions.
Communication and Documentation:
Communicate effectively with team members, stakeholders, and end-users.
Document system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting steps.
Problem Resolution:
Detect, analyze, and resolve system faults promptly.
Investigate performance issues and implement corrective actions.
Maintenance and Tools:
Utilize maintenance tools and procedures to keep the system up-to-date.
Stay informed about industry trends and best practices.
Programming and Design:
Proficiency in one or more programming languages
Apply design techniques to enhance system reliability and efficiency.
