Primary Purpose

Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) is the world s largest advocacy association representing member companies, state biotechnology groups, academic and research institutions, and related organizations across the United States and in 30+ countries. BIO members are involved in the research and development of innovative healthcare, agricultural, industrial and environmental biotechnology products. BIO also produces the BIO International Convention, the world s largest gathering of the biotechnology industry, along with industry-leading investor and partnering meetings held around the world.

This role focuses on leading data analysis and technology enhancement for an organization's key revenue streams. The ideal candidate will possess advanced data analysis skills, including experience with tools like Power BI, Tableau, and Hadoop/Spark. They will be responsible for reviewing and improving the current technology stack, developing a business case for enhancements, and implementing data analytics strategies to drive growth. Key responsibilities include managing data quality, developing analytics vision, optimizing business intelligence tools, providing data skills support, translating data into actionable insights, improving processes within Salesforce, and maintaining comprehensive documentation. The role requires a strategic thinker who can balance quick wins with long-term data analytics architecture to support the organization's objectives.

Responsibilities
  • Lead data analysis efforts for the organization's primary revenue drivers (Membership, Events/Partnering, and BIO Business Solutions).
  • Review and enhance the current technology stack, developing a business case for meaningful improvements to drive increased profits.
  • Implement and manage data quality and governance best practices to maintain data integrity across the organization.
  • Develop and execute a strategic vision for analytics and business intelligence that aligns with organizational growth objectives.
  • Oversee the development and optimization of analytics platforms, ensuring efficient use of business intelligence tools such as Power BI, Tableau, and SQL.
  • Provide support and training to team members to enhance their data analytics skills and capabilities.
  • Translate complex data findings into actionable business recommendations and insights.
  • Leverage internal and external datasets to identify growth opportunities, perform market share analysis, and forecast demand.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and implement process improvements and automation opportunities within the organization s existing technology stack, including Salesforce.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of data models, processes, and reporting requirements to facilitate knowledge sharing and ensure effective data governance.
Required Background and skills

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor s degree in computer science, Data Science, or related field; Master's degree preferred
  • 10+ years of experience in data analytics, IT delivery, and SDLC
  • 5+ years of experience in technical/solution IT architecture and data management
  • Proven track record leading medium to large-scale data projects

Technical Skills:

  • Expertise in data modeling, database design, and ETL processes
  • Hands-on experience with business intelligence tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Qlik, Spotfire)
  • Strong proficiency in SQL, NoSQL, SOQL, and programming languages (e.g., Python, R, Java)
  • Proficiency in data warehousing, advanced analytics, and reporting
  • Experience with big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark) and cloud computing platforms
  • Knowledge of machine learning, AI concepts, and their business applications

Data Management and Governance:

  • Strong understanding of data quality management and governance best practices
  • Knowledge of data privacy regulations and security best practices
  • Expertise in designing and implementing data lakes (e.g., Snowflake)

Methodologies and Practices:

  • Hands-on experience with Agile methodologies and practices
  • Proficiency in developing strategic roadmaps and managing competing stakeholder needs
  • Experience with version control systems and CI/CD practices

Soft Skills and Leadership:

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, able to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences
  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills
  • Ability to influence and drive change across multiple stakeholders
  • Experience in leadership roles, mentoring teams, and fostering data-driven culture

Industry Knowledge:

  • Broad knowledge of current technology trends and designs in data analytics
  • Familiarity with biotechnology or life sciences industry preferred
