Symptone (pronounced SIMP-tuhm) is a pioneering nonprofit focused on revolutionizing the understanding and diagnosis of medical conditions on BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) skin tones. Through educational initiatives and a impactful blog, Symptone aims to promote representation of BIPOC skin tones in medical textbooks, raise awareness about skin conditions on individuals of color, and challenge misconceptions in healthcare.

Position Overview:

We are looking for a Director of Public Relations to lead and grow Symptone’s PR department. This key role will involve overseeing media relations, communications, and public outreach strategies to amplify Symptone’s mission and initiatives. The Director will work closely with PR Representatives, Community Engagement Coordinators (CECs), and Student Ambassadors, ensuring cohesive and effective messaging across all platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Strategy: Develop and lead Symptone’s public relations strategy, working to raise awareness of the organization’s mission both in the USA and internationally.
  • Team Management: Oversee a team of PR Representatives, CECs, and Student Ambassadors, ensuring strong collaboration and alignment in communication efforts across regions and states.
  • Media Relations: Manage media outreach, develop press releases, and foster relationships with media outlets to secure coverage for Symptone’s programs and campaigns.
  • Community Outreach: Work closely with the Community Engagement Coordinators to promote local initiatives and foster relationships with diverse communities, particularly in underserved areas.
  • Event Promotion: Organize and promote media events, interviews, and public engagements to raise awareness of Symptone’s initiatives.
  • Crisis Communication: Oversee crisis management efforts, providing guidance and communication strategies during challenging or sensitive situations.
  • Cross-Department Collaboration: Collaborate with the Program Director and other department heads to ensure that PR strategies align with Symptone’s broader mission and program goals.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in public relations, communications, or media relations.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, particularly with diverse and remote teams.
  • Excellent communication, writing, and presentation skills.
  • Familiarity with community outreach and engagement strategies, especially for underserved populations.
  • Experience working in a nonprofit or volunteer-driven environment is a plus.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work in a fast-paced, collaborative setting.
