Job Description:
We are seeking a skilled Layer 1 Network Technician to join our dynamic IT team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of physical network infrastructure. This includes cabling, hardware setup, and ensuring optimal network performance. The Layer 1 Network
Technician will report to the Advisor of Mergers and Acquisitions and Infrastructure projects within IT Infrastructure and work in collaboration with
infrastructure engineers/advisors, enterprise architects, project managers, and 3rd party vendors.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Install, terminate, and test various types of network cables (CAT5e, CAT6, fiber optics).
  • Maintain and troubleshoot physical network infrastructure.
  • Perform regular inspections and preventive maintenance of network hardware.
  • Collaborate with IT teams to support network upgrades and expansions.
  • Document network configurations and changes.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.
  • Execute standards, specifications, and processes for the physical layer 1 infrastructure, including copper and fiber optic cable plant infrastructure, electrical systems, and HVAC systems.
  • Review bidding documents, validate designs by third-party engineers, and coordinate vendors for construction and renovation projects.
  • Provide operational support and oversight for data, server, voice, video, and 3rd party equipment.

Top Skills Required:
  • Proficiency in cable installation and termination.
  • Knowledge of network hardware and infrastructure.
  • Experience with network testing tools (e.g., Fluke testers, OTDRs).
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams and schematics.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Thorough understanding of ANSI/BISCI standards and requirements.
  • Understanding of electrical systems, including basic electrical design, UPS systems, generators, and grounding and bonding.
  • Basic understanding of building HVAC systems.
  • Extremely self-motivated with the ability to drive resources toward deadlines and manage ambiguity.
  • Ability to explain complex technical ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Cisco networking (layer 1) experience.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills, with the ability to effectively interact with nurse managers, medical staff, and other stakeholders.
  • Flexible schedule, including the ability to work normal 1st shifts and flex to evenings for cut overs.

Experience Required:
  • 5 or more years of experience in a technical setting.
  • Participation in process improvement or project work.
  • 3-5 years as a copper and fiber plant installer.
  • 3-5 years as a copper and fiber plant supervisor or manager.
  • 1-3 years in an infrastructure project management role.

Preferred:
  • Layer 1 and project coordination experience.
  • Juniper networking experience.

Role Breakdown:
  • 30%: Review design documents and project scopes to ensure plans are compliant with standards.
  • 25%: Develop and maintain standards and requirements for the proper deployment of all layer 1 cabling and supporting infrastructure while adhering to and advocating for industry standards and best practices.
  • 20%: Oversee 3rd party vendors to ensure services are delivered on time, with quality, and are routinely checked to ensure optimal performance.
  • 20%: Conduct site visits for quality assurance, Request for Information (RFI) fulfillment, and vendor meetings on project and operational work.
  • 5%: Work with internal customers, IT field services, and 3rd party vendors to communicate, coordinate, manage expectations, approve, and assist with operational processes such as crisis management, capacity management, and other ITIL processes.
