The Role

BGC is looking for a Laboratory Manager to help lead our Advanced Geotechnical Laboratory in Fredericton, New Brunswick (Canada). BGC s advanced laboratory is a state-of-the-art facility that has established itself as the world leading consulting laboratory for characterization of the geotechnical properties of soil and rock. BGC s laboratory specializes in strength, compressibility, and permeability testing of soil, and strength testing of rock. Our testing equipment includes soils index testing, cyclic dynamic simple shear, servo-controlled fully automated triaxial, automated oedometer systems, and rock triaxial and direct shear machines.

The laboratory team comprises approximately 15 highly skilled engineers and technicians with a passion for delivering high quality testing for some of the world s most complex geotechnical projects. The team is looking for a dedicated senior manager with experience in geotechnical testing and laboratory management.

Reporting to the Chief Technical Officer (CTO), the successful candidate will provide senior leadership and oversee the operations of the lab while practicing our values of One Team, Excellence, Curiosity, Common Sense, and Clarity. This position is based in our Fredericton, NB office.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee lab testing project delivery including quoting, proposals, budgeting, project execution, deliverables, and invoicing
  • Oversee lab operations including scheduling, sample chain of custody including sample shipping/receiving, storage, and disposal
  • Coordinate acquisition, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory testing equipment
  • Oversee training programs and continuing professional development of laboratory staff
  • Oversee comprehensive review system of all laboratory testing data
  • Lead initiatives to maintain high quality standards
  • Resource management, annual planning, budgeting
  • Setting and executing strategic direction for the lab in line with organizational and laboratory team goals

Required Education, Experience & Competencies

  • 10 to 15+ years of relevant professional experience with laboratory testing including laboratory management
  • Undergraduate degree in Geological/Geotechnical Engineering, Geoscience, or a related field or Certified Technician/Technology Diploma
  • Technical expertise and project management experience
  • Exceptional communication skills in English, both written and oral, and the ability to communicate effectively
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and team-building skills

Desired Education, Experience & Competencies

  • Registered as a professional engineer (P.Eng.), professional geoscientist (P.Geo.), or Professional Technician (P.Tech.)
  • Experience with construction, mining, pipeline, transportation, and/or consulting engineering
  • Experience with business management and operations
  • Experience with strategic planning

Position Requirements

Drug & Alcohol Testing

To ensure we meet our client s compliance requirements and our workplace health and safety commitments, BGC has a drug and alcohol policy that applies to this position. The policy states that an employee may be required to take a drug and alcohol test prior to engaging in field work. This testing could be requested within an employee s first week or in the future, as required. It is important to note that some clients also require random drug and alcohol testing, and/or testing in the event of a health and safety accident or incident.

Driver s License

BGC requires that employees have a valid driver's license, and that employees can drive a field pickup truck. Upon hiring, BGC will require a driver s abstract to allow for a safety review of your driving history.
