Job Description

The National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) is on an exhilarating trajectory, expanding its reach and redefining the landscape of women's sports. With rapid expansion into new markets, the league is capturing the hearts and minds of fans across the nation, fueling record-breaking attendance figures and shattering viewership numbers. As a result, the NWSL's Office of League Transformation is seeking a Director of Analytics to facilitate data-driven decision-making across the league.

NWSL Director, Analytics

The Director of Analytics will be responsible for enabling data-driven decision-making across our League. The ideal candidate will be "intra-preneurial", capable of harnessing the power of data that exists across our organization, structuring and warehousing our data effectively, designing and running analytics experiments, and answering key business questions in partnership with leaders across our team. This is a new role that will cross-functionally streamline all tools/platforms on our data stack and drive the creation and maintenance of dashboards that track KPIs over time. This role is part of the Office of League Transformation, led by our COO.

What you'll do:

  • Identify, structure, and warehouse data sources from across our League - including marketing/fans, sporting, and business/finance.
  • Analyze all customer forms of data to answer questions about fan behavior and help build a foundation for a robust segmentation strategy and personalized marketing tactics, working closely with our Growth Marketing leaders.
  • Analyze all player and sporting data to answer questions about on-field competition, player development, and to share best practices with our Sporting department and across our Clubs.
  • Partner closely with Finance and other business leaders to drive discussions on short/long term forecasts based on current and historical performance KPI trends; communicate to the team on any risk/opportunity based on a forecast.
  • Own and drive the analytics roadmap and promote data-based decision making across the organization.
  • Design and develop dashboards and recurring reports, tracking performance across key business metrics to promote data-driven decision-making and optimize League performance over time.
  • Provide deep-dive analyses and handle ad-hoc queries on a broad range of critical questions.
  • Lead and inspire an analytical driven approach to other members of the League office staff.
  • Continue to build new and evolve existing processes and systems to leverage all our 1st party data.

Who you are:

  • An innately analytical/quantitative thinker.
  • You balance openness and warmth with a sense of urgency and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • You can fly at 30,000 feet and be 3 inches off the ground. You aren't afraid to roll up your sleeves and get in deep with the analysis yourself; you can also elevate to communicate key concepts to our executive team and Board.
  • You act as a translator between the data and other parts of our business. You help leaders distill what problems they are trying to solve, and you identify opportunities to use data to drive better decision making.
  • You bring a collaborative approach to your work. People enjoy working with you because you find opportunities to win together.
  • Ownership and accountability are part of who you are; you see opportunities to improve processes, make us more efficient and effective, and you relish the chance to drive that type of continuous improvement across our org.

What you'll bring to the team:

  • 8+ years of experience in data analytics or related field, with strong preference for experience in consumer tech or related industries that focus on audience segmentation and lifecycle analysis.
  • A Bachelor's degree with strong focus on analytical and quantitative skills, or equivalent work experience.
  • Proven track record of turning raw data into meaningful analysis, presenting to business stakeholders, and driving value for the business.
  • Proficiency working with visualization platforms.
  • High-level understanding of analytical concepts like funnel optimization, user segmentation, cohort analyses, time series analyses, regression models, etc.
  • Familiarity with statistical concepts related to experiment design, hypothesis testing, and predictive modeling.
  • Ability to understand what data sets are required to answer business questions; knowledge of platforms (SQL, R, etc) to drive analysis.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel, Google Sheets is required.
  • Strong understanding of consumer/marketing KPIs (ROAS, CAC, LTV); experience with ticketing a plus.
  • Experience and ability to properly communicate with data engineers and data scientists.
  • Ability to work 3 days per week from our NYC office.
