JOB DESCRIPTION

IT System Administrator

General Description:

This position requires a highly self-motivated individual with the ability to manage the ongoing support of the Clerk's IT infrastructure, networks and systems. The position supports complex business level hardware and software platforms associated with network servers, storage systems, security, and backup systems; provides network account management services, escalated technical support, technology research, and manages assigned technology projects. Excellent troubleshooting, issue resolution, and project skills are essential, in addition to the ability to communicate effectively with other staff, team members, direct management, and technology providers.

Essential Job Functions (in addition to what is outlined in the General Description, this position requires the ability to):

  • Perform the functions of administrator of the Clerk s operating systems, requiring 24/7 availability by phone to address any infrastructure problems that arise.
  • Coordinate repairs for business systems in an efficient and expeditious manner to minimize downtime.
  • Communicate outages to management and affected Clerk employees in a timely manner.
  • Optimize system monitoring and proactive alerting for business
  • Ensure compliance with data center change and configuration management processes.
  • Conduct research on business products, services, and standards, and work with peers and customers to identify or define and implement new designs and concepts.
  • Provide accurate, timely and unbiased feedback to IT management and project team through effective written and oral communications, such as ROI analysis.
  • Develop and follow disaster recovery and business continuity procedures.
  • Manage the life cycle of business/enterprise software and network equipment which includes installation, administration, maintenance, decommissioning, and removal.
  • Plan a strategy to maintain security on the systems and network, optimizing and evaluating the plan regularly.
  • Perform installations, setup, configuration, upgrades, troubleshooting, and remedial maintenance for servers, storage systems, and backup systems. Monitor and tune systems regularly.
  • Possess the ability to provide technical support for complex computer hardware, software, and end-user network connectivity issues.
  • Promptly resolve issues tied to infrastructure, decrease down time, and recommend new cost saving and efficiency initiatives.
  • Provide excellent customer service to Clerk and other County departments, employees, and members of the public.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

  • Knowledge and command of business English, spelling, arithmetic, computer skills, and office practices and procedures.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to interact professionally and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and diagrams.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to function independently and in group settings as an expert in matters of specialized policy, analyses, or complex technical systems.
  • Strong knowledge of Windows Server operating systems, hardware, networking, system administration including Active Directory, file permissions, Group Policy, and Microsoft administration.
  • Knowledge of scripting such as PowerShell and MSSQL.
  • Knowledge of SAN management and server virtualization, such as VMWare.
  • Knowledge of Wireless technologies, security, encryption methodologies and implementing new Access Points and SSIDs. Knowledge of MIST helpful.
  • Ability to act as a project leader.
  • Ability to install and configure computer systems, install applications, and diagnose hardware and software problems as needed.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both verbal and written form.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Ability to take a teamwork approach to the job by cooperating with others, offering to help others when needed, and considering larger organization or team goals rather than individual concerns.
  • Includes the ability to build a constructive team spirit where team members are committed to the goals and objectives of the team.

Education and Experience:

Possession of a high school equivalency diploma issued by a State Department of Education or the United States Armed Forces. Four years of direct experience or alternatively, Bachelor s Degree from four-year college or university with major course work in information management, computer science or related field. Four years of progressively knowledgeable and responsible experience in system administration and analysis in a diverse business computing environment also required.

Comparable training, education, or experience may be substituted for the above minimum qualifications.

Licenses, Certifications, Registrations:

Formal training and certifications may be required for various technologies.

Essential Physical Demands:

  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction) including close and color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus to bring an object into sharp focus.
  • Acceptable hearing (with or without correction).
  • Ability to communicate with others to exchange information.
  • Prolonged periods in a stationary position, often at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Repetitive motions that may include the use of wrists, hands and/or fingers.
  • Ability to move about to accomplish tasks or to move from one worksite to another.
  • Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer.
  • Ability to adjust, move or lift objects up to 20 pounds in all directions.
  • Type at a minimum rate of 35 words per minute.
