Department Summary

The Center for Equity Promotion (CEQP) is a research center and Grant Management Unit (GMU) within the College of Education (COE) at the University of Oregon (UO). The GMU provides pre-award and post-award grant administrative support to projects, centers, and institutes within the GMU as well as to other centers or institutes that require GMU assistance.

CEQP is dedicated to working with communities to better understand and support the positive development of children and families, particularly those who are underserved by education, health, and social service systems. We focus on populations that bear the greatest burden of health and education disparities related to adverse social and economic conditions. Our research informs culturally-specific prevention, intervention, and policy efforts that build on community strengths. Our aim is to improve the ability of education, health, and social services delivery systems to respond to the needs of underserved communities.

Position Summary

The purpose of this Research Assistant position is to assist in carrying out a particular research agenda. A research assistant works as a member of a research team under the direct supervision of other faculty researchers. They may follow standard protocols or determine protocols to be used, based on the guidelines of the principal investigator. Research Assistants contribute in many ways to the research project by conducting research, outreach and/or external engagement, proposal development, and supervision and/or mentoring.

The Research Assistant will support the implementation and coordination of research activities for the “Navigating New Currents” research project and other research projects within the Center for Equity Promotion (CEQP) by assisting with participant management; data collection and management; project tracking; and project facilitation. The goal of New Currents Research Project is to develop a family-school partnership program designed for Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander (NHPI) unique cultures using an iterative development process in collaboration with our Advisory Board comprised NHPI community members and leaders familiar with NHPI cultures; NHPI parents; and educational leaders. Intervention activities will include three components: School, Family, and Bridge, in which schools and families work directly together to increase their collaborative support for NHPI students.

The research project activities will take place in schools and places of worship/churches in the following areas: Salem, Portland, Medford Oregon and Vancouver Washington. This position requires travel up to 50% of the time to the project activity areas as well as to the UO CEQP office in Eugene, Oregon. This position is eligible for remote work in the Salem or Portland area.

The Research Assistant will regularly interact with project participants, external collaborators at research sites, and internal faculty and staff at CEQP. The Research Assistant will also work closely with the Project Manager and other project staff to ensure that all project-related tasks are carried out in a timely and efficient manner. The Research Assistant is expected to independently manage and make decisions about scheduling tasks. The Research Assistant will be responsible for adjusting their work schedule, including working evenings and weekends as needed, to meet the demands of recruitment, data collection, and project events, ensuring that all tasks are completed efficiently while maintaining flexibility and accommodate participant availability.

This position will be supervised by Dr. John Lind (PI) and will report to them along with the Project Manager and Co-PI.

This position is a 12-month career faculty position in the research assistant series. The position’s responsibilities are guided by the COE NTTF Professional Responsibilities Policy, United Academics Collective Bargaining Agreement, and the COE’s NTTF Policy for Promotion and Review.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree with related coursework (e.g., psychology, social work, education, global/international studies, counseling, family and human services, etc.)
  • Two years’ experience or training appropriate to the position: experience conducting behavioral research studies with community samples, including conducting interviews, data management, collecting school data, implementing school or community-based interventions, experience working with schools and Pacific Islander communities

Ability to travel to research study sites in Salem, OR, the Portland, OR / Vancouver, WA / Medford, OR areas, and the UO CEQP office in Eugene, OR is required.

Professional Competencies

  • Highly developed cultural competence; a deep understanding of and experience working in Pacific Islander communities
  • Strong research skills
  • Ability to work effectively with educators, parents, students, collaborators, and staff from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to work with all Microsoft Office products, as well as REDCap, SPSS, DropBox, and or other similar programs
  • Ability to attend to a high level of detail and multiple tasks on a day-to-day basis (e.g., maintain accurate project timelines and ensure all deadlines are met; assist with manuscript preparation and report writing)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal and written skills in one or more Pacific Island languages
  • Experience with participant recruitment, assessment, tracking, record-keeping, incentives, etc.
  • Experience with supervising and conducting data collection and working with intervention staff
  • Experience working with federally funded projects and familiarity with reporting, record-keeping, etc.
  • Experience working independently at times with moderate supervision
  • Experience working in team environment, requiring participatory decision-making
