A Process Engineer (E-coat) will implement, develop, and optimize production methodologies in the manufacturing operations of Tesla. This Engineer will be responsible for directly supporting the production line, continuously optimizing the manufacturing process metrics of multiple high volume manufacturing lines that include dispense systems, assembly, laser brazing, robot stations, etc. They will interface with Design, Test, and Quality Engineering to solve problems, improve manufacturability, and implement continual improvement. Sustain products with cost reduction and yield improvements. Work with quality to compile and evaluate data to determine appropriate limits and variables for process or material specifications.

Responsibilities
- Analyze and optimize production processes to ensure safety, quality, and efficiency, utilizing Lean Manufacturing best practices and maximizing Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and yield, capacity, and capability
- Develop robust and clear data collection, visualization, and analysis tools. Enable data driven operational and financial decisions through predictive insights into tool and process performance, including integration of factory data systems and use of software such as MySQL, Python, R, JMP, Minitab, Tableau, and Ignition
- Develop and modify line layouts, including material flow, waste reduction, ergonomics, and tool/fixture selection, to improve process efficiency and reduce costs
- Diagnose issues found during the part manufacturing process and drive corrective action back to source, utilizing structured problem-solving techniques such as DMAIC, Ishikawa, Five Why (5W), and Eight Disciplines (8D)
- Monitor and reduce process variation using techniques such as Statistical Process Control (SPC) and Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA) to achieve world-class quality levels
- Participate in the development and maintenance of FMEAs and Control Plans to ensure process control and quality
- Apply technical knowledge to innovate, design, and develop processes, tooling, assembly fixtures, and procedures to improve manufacturability and quality
- Implement and support Lean manufacturing and 5S initiatives to improve process efficiency and reduce waste
- Create and maintain Manufacturing Instructions, routings, and associated processes. Develop and train sustaining technicians, assist in the training of operators as needed. Manage activities for process sustaining technicians to support day to day coverage of production line, including developing and documenting appropriate rework procedures
- Support 24/7 production
Requirements
- Degree in Chemical or Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent experience
- 1 - 3 years of experience in a high volume, highly automated manufacturing facility while focused on process optimization, data analytics, or quality engineering
- Strong problem-solving skills and an aptitude for learning systems quickly. Able to utilize structured problem-solving techniques to resolve high level performance issues into addressable actions
- Strong team working skills at all levels of an organization, especially skilled at working with direct labor to understand challenges and work on developing optimal solutions using structured methods
- Exceptional capacity for managing simultaneous activities, competing priorities and challenges
- Capable of identifying critical process parameters and applying statistics to process measurement and control
- Good understanding of BOMs, manufacturability, process design, process validation, assembly methods, design reviews and cost reduction methodologies
- Strong skills with common workplace software (word processor, spreadsheet, database, etc.)
- Ability to read and interpret basic mechanical and electrical drawings preferred
