This position is located within the Operational Services Bureau, Hazardous Incident Response Division, Hazardous Devices Section. The Hazardous Devices Section (HDS) provides specialized response capabilities to the Department on a daily basis for events that require heightened protective security measures. In support of the USCP mission, HDS is responsible for ensuring that designated security areas are free of hazardous devices. HDS' primary goal is to provide a safe environment for Members of Congress, staff, and visitors, free from explosive hazardous materials or devices. This mission requires extensive specialized training and equipment; a variety of daily sweeps and inspections throughout the Capitol Complex; and the capability to respond.

HDS Sergeant:

Provides leadership during events requiring heightened protective security measures. Leads a Section and teams of bomb technicians during suspected/confirmed improvised explosives devices (IEDs) and/or weapons of mass destruction. Conducts security surveys and completes plans of action for CODELs and Special Events. Works rotating shifts as assigned by the Division Commander to properly oversee operations and manage day-to-day scheduling and activities. Evaluates intelligence information on trends in IEDs. Performs other duties and projects assigned by the HDS Lieutenant.

Performs the administrative and human resource management functions relative to the staff supervised. Plans, schedules, and assigns work to subordinates. Establishes guidelines and performance expectations for staff members and provides an effective example of leadership; provides feedback and periodically evaluates employee performance. Provides advice, counsel, and/or instruction to staff members to foster an inclusive team environment. Recommends or approves appointments, selections, or reassignments to positions appropriate to the selection authority delegated. Effects disciplinary measures as appropriate to the authority delegated in this area.

The results of this vacancy announcement selection process will be used to fill positions within the HDS. Candidates that are selected, are expected to remain on the unit a minimum of 5 years, from graduation from the Hazardous Device Basic School, unless promoted during this time. More than one selection may be made from this vacancy announcement. The selection list for this vacancy announcement will be active for a period of 12 months from the date of approval of the selection memorandum.

Starting at $94,390 Per Year (LP 08)
